Clear examples of this cultural transplant are given in this work, including but not limited to the use of English language in place of the indigenous languages for communication even when there are no foreigners, smoking of cigarettes, ladies putting on trousers, abortions as a means of birth control, free premarital and extramarital sexual relationships, and homosexuality and gay practices. These which were viewed as an anathema to Nigeria's cultural values have supplanted the traditional conservatism of the Nigerian people. This work particularly looks at Chimamanda Adichie's Purple Hibiscus and distills classical cases of cultural imperialism. Adichie through the character Eugene, captures cultural imperialism as seen in the life of this vastly brainwashed "been-to" who is clearly portrayed as an imperial lackey, capitalist, and apologist. Also, the character of Rev. Father Benedict, a Briton, who often found any indigenous songs in St. Agnes Parish was quite offensive. The work also captures cultural imperialism in the ironical contempt with which the catholic devotee, Eugene, treats his own father, Papa Nnukwu, steeped in the traditional African cultural values, and Eugene viewes him as Godlessness. The essay concludes by identifying the cultural crises that cultural imperialism creates in the Nigerian state, and recommends ways of diluting and diffusing the present cultural imperialism as a solution to the myriad of socio-political crises currently experienced by the Nigerian society.展开更多

Discourse on English language education within China has, both historically and at present, pitted the pragmatic value of English against concerns of cultural and linguistic erosion and imposition. Concerns over the corrupting impact the English language may have on the Chinese language, and further on Chinese culture, uneasily coexist with an acceptance of the English language's role as the key to modernization and economic development. Voices of past and present, have at their core a desire for the protection of a reified cultural identity or essence. However, cultural and linguistic influence has not merely been imposed upon China from external forces, but has been actively drawn in by domestic forces. Such domestic forces range from foreign language education policies that meet the demands of a globalized market-driven economy, to a market demand for English language media such as TV programs, movies and literature. Ultimately, the presence and significance of these domestic forces undermines a view of the English language as a vehicle of cultural imperialism in China.展开更多

This is an intrinsic obstacle to creating a more equitable, democratic and effective global climate or environmental governance system. Criticism of international carbon politics and its "ecological imperialism," based on traditional "green-left" theories from Marxist philosophy and political economy, provides a theoretical basis for seeking an alternative way to cope with global climate change effectively. As a responsible developing country, China's response to climate change is not only an internal requirement for the promotion of its own sustainable development, but also reflects its responsibility to create a community of shared future for mankind. This rationale for our time determines that it is necessary for China to become a world leader in coping with global climate change and environmental governance through a leadership which lies in making a contribution rather than fighting for hegemony.展开更多

It realizes the sublation of theory and ideology by means of critical, explanatory and constructive logic, displaying a unique theoretical originality. Lenin's theory of imperialism offers a theoretical reflection on the development of capitalism and its historical trends; it is a practical response to the world structural contradictions arising from imperialism, an epochal reflection that vigorously explores and constructs the value claims of a new civilization and provides in-depth Marxist view of world history. The methodology and general principles of Lenin's study of imperialism are based on the materialist view of history. They are not out of date, nor are the propositions in his theory of imperialism, based as they are on research into monopoly. At the same time as it declared war on the values, systems and practices of the old world, Lenin's theory provided a completely new cognitive method, philosophical attitude and ideal values for the future society. This has become the precious wealth of mankind, wealth that transcends historical time and space.展开更多

However, Hong Kong has been a colony of the British Empire for 154 years and 11 months and it has been under Japan rule for three years and eight years. Hong Kong returned to China in 1997. Its special history has significant influence on the language development in Hong Kong. During the period of British Empire, the popularity of Christianity, the commercial usefulness of English and high prestige in the society have resulted in the widely spread of English. In addition, English-medium education is in a relatively high state under the colonial regime while Chinese-medium education to some extent is not emphasized. The government has ruled that if parents would like their children to be educated in a good government school, they need to receive English-medium education. Consequently, the majority of parents would like their children to be educated by English. Apart from that, English has a legal status as an official language during British Colonialism period in Hong Kong. Lastly, some scholars supported the existence of a new English variety in Hong Kong(Hong Kong English), but others do not believe that. The requirements of language policies and the process of language spread in Hong Kong could be explained using some theories such as‘linguistic imperialism',‘Kachru's concentric circles' and‘Schneider's five stages'. For instance, from Kachru's perspective, the development of English in Hong Kong could be placed at the beginning of the third stage. It will firstly demonstrate some primary language policies in Hong Kong before its‘Handover'to China. And then, it will show several significant language spread theories and focus on relating them to the requirements of language policies and the process of language spread in Hong Kong.展开更多

So, technology is approached as a simple efficiency increase whose source is unknown. In terms of established economics view, technology is like a "black box" that cannot be predicted. As the creator of the concept of"creative destruction", Joseph Schumpeter (1883-1950) caused significant changes in terms of the view of neoclassical economics about technology. On one hand, Schumpeter created a new point of view about the concept of"innovation" by using key concepts, such as "invention", "imitation", and "business cycles". Schumpeter's "creative destruction" concept carries out the role of a new map for the new institutional economics trend which accepts "technology" as an institution. On the other hand, if one is to understand why the ideology differs between neoclassical economics and new institutional economics, "transaction costs" should be analyzed. Since, transaction costs and creative destruction have a relationship between each other; Schumpeter and Coase's ideas are resembling each other. While doing this, this paper will try to discuss the question of how to accept the technology as "external" instead of "internal" limit neoclassical economics. In this process, it will primarily base the dimension on the concept of"technology" developed by Schumpeter. The second station is an inquiry between Schumpeter's and Coase's ideas about technology. Although new institutional economics (NIE) and neoclassical economics can be confused, they can be seperated from each other by the way they look at technology. Because, technology is accepted as an external theme by neoclassical economics, on the contrary, NIE acceptes technology as an internal fact. One of the most important reasons why technology is internal in terms of NIE can be evaluated by "transaction costs". As a result, the author will give effort to create a critical presentation in order to readdress the viewpoint of mainstream economics about "technology".展开更多

文摘When medium itself has become message and gets disproportionate importance, the substance of the message gets pushed back. Influence of visual media on culture and people has been increasing day by day. Though it influences people both positively and negatively, it affects more adversely than otherwise as the media has begun affecting the very identity of the masses and reduced them to passive subjects. The plurality of culture and identity of people in the third world countries are at stake. Strong resistance of the masses supported by a new order of international information is the need of the hour. Keeping this in mind, a revisit to the influence of visual media is deliberated here.
