The conversion of forest land to other types of land cover is one of the major issues in the global fight against climate change. Understanding the direct and indirect factors of these conversions from local studies in the tropics is essential to project the future impact of human activities on the preservation of tropical forests in general and the forests of the Republic of Congo in particular. This study, conducted in five localities with different socioeconomic contexts in the Republic of Congo, aims to analyze the variability of drivers of deforestation and forest degradation linked to urbanization in the Congo Basin. Using a series of land cover maps from the years 1986, 2003 and 2019 for the cities of Ouesso, Pokola, Ngombe, Impfondo and Dongou, as well as field data and socio-economic information collected from local and central administrations, a unique model has been developed to understand the explanatory patterns of forest loss. Deforestation around urban centers is mainly due to urban agriculture due to population growth, as well as the spatial expansion of cities, which have a major impact on the stability and integrity of forests. Shifting agriculture is the main direct cause of deforestation and forest degradation, representing 48% of the total sample, followed by the collection of wood fuel (22%), the collection of construction wood (19%), illegal logging (6%) and urban expansion (5%). Forecasts indicate that forest loss around major cities will increase by 487, 20 ha to 5266, 73 ha by 2050 compared to the base year of 2019. This study highlights the need for a new system of land management and poverty alleviation of local populations to ensure the stability of the Congo Basin tropical forests around large and small African cities. 展开更多

The Bikaner-Nagaur and Barmer Basins(Rajasthan)are the most important petroliferous sedimentary basins in India. For over a decade, the exploration and extraction of hydrocarbons in these basins.Paleocene-Eocene age rocks bear organic-rich sediments in these basins, including lignite and carbonaceous shale deposits. The present research investigates the source rock properties, petroleum potential and thermal maturity of the carbonaceous shale partings from the lignite mines of Gurha(Bikaner-Nagaur Basin)and Kapurdi(Barmer Basin)using petrographical and geochemical tools. The carbonaceous shales have high organic matter(OM),with considerable total organic carbon(TOC)contents ranging from 13%to 39%.Furthermore,they contain hydrogen-rich kerogen, including types II and II/III,as evidenced by the Rock-Eval and elemental analysis results. The existence of these kerogen types indicates the abundance of reactive(vitrinite and liptinite)macerals. However, the carbonaceous shales from the Bikaner–Nagaur Basin have oil generation potentials, with a high hydrogen index(up to 516 mg HC/g TOC)and a H/C ratio(up to 1.5)along with a significant presence of oil-prone liptinitic macerals.Apart from the geochemical and petrological results, the studied shales have low huminite reflectance(0.31%–0.48%),maximum temperature(S_(2) peak;Tmax)between 419℃ and 429℃,and low production index values(PI:0.01–0.03).These results indicate that these carbonaceous shales contain immature OM,and thereby, they cannot yet release commercial amount of oil. This immaturity level in the studied outcrop section is due to the shallow burial depth.Geochemical proxies further indicate the presence of both oil and gas-prone source rocks. 展开更多

The middle reaches of the Yellow River represent a critically ecologically sensitive and fragile area within the Yellow River Basin(YRB),holding significant scientific value for ecological security assessment and environmental management strategies. This study comprehensively evaluates the evolution of the eco-environment in the“Two Mountains,Seven Rivers, and One Basin”(TSO)area of Shanxi Province from 2000 to 2020 based on fraction vegetation cover(FVC)derived from the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI),net primary productivity(NPP)calculated via the Carnegie–Ames–Stanford approach(CASA),and the remote sensing ecological index(RSEI).The results indicate a significant improvement in the TSO’s eco-environment from 2000 to 2020,with the RSEI values increased from 0.34 in 2000 to 0.41 in 2020(an increase of 17.76%).Both FVC and NPP demonstrated notable upward trends, with FVC increasing by 22.74%and NPP by 53.11%.Spatially,FVC rose by 21.84%,19.72%and 26.06%,respectively in the Two Mountains,Seven Rivers, and the YRB in Shanxi Province.Similarly, the NPPs increased by 51.60%,48.60%,and 61.65%in these regions over the past 21 years. Both FVC and NPP exhibited decreasing patterns from southeast to northwest, with significant eco-environmental improvements in the northern region and slower recovery in the southern region.Precipitation was the primary causes influencing vegetation recovery, showing positive trends in the central and northern TSO regions, while this trend reversed in the southern. The RSEI value indicate substantial eco-environment improvements in the central and northern areas(Sanggan,Daqing and Hutuo River Basins),whereas the southern regions(e.g.,Zhang,Qin,Fen and Sushui River Basins)remain in poor grade.Human activities, particularly land use/cover changes marked by increased forestation and urbanization alongside decreased cultivated land, significantly affected vegetation cover patterns. This study provides scientific references for formulating policies on ecological construction and high-quality development in the YRB. 展开更多

The Ordos Basin(OB)in the western part of the North China Craton(NCC),was located at the jointed area of multi-plates and has recorded the Mesozoic tectonic characteristics. Its tectonic evolution in the Mesozoic is significant to understand the tectonic transformation of the northern margin of the NCC.In this work, the detrital zircon and apatite(U-Th)/He chronological system were analyzed in the northern part of the OB,and have provided new evidence for the regional tectonic evolution.The(U-Th)/He chronological data states the weighted ages of 240‒235 Ma,141 Ma with the peak distribution of 244 Ma,219 Ma,173 Ma,147‒132 Ma.The thermal evolution, geochronological data, and regional unconformities have proved four stages of regional tectonic evolution for the OB and its surroundings in the Mesozoic:(1)The Late Permian-Early Triassic;(2)the Late Triassic-Early Jurassic;(3)the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous;(4)the Late Cretaceous-Early Paleogene. It is indicated that the multi-directional convergence from the surrounding tectonic units has controlled the Mesozoic tectonic evolution of the OB.Four-stage tectonic evolution reflected the activation or end of different plate movements and provided new time constraints for the regional tectonic evolution of the NCC in the Mesozoic. 展开更多

Controlled by fluctuating paleoclimates and sedimentary environments, the organic and inorganic features of the Lucaogou Formation exhibit strong heterogeneity in the vertical profile, challenging conventional geological interpretation. To elucidate the possible influence of heterogeneity on resource evaluation,a high-resolution sampling approach was applied to an 86.2 cm long core from the Lucaogou Formation of the Jimsar sag in the Junggar Basin.86 sets of samples were micro-drilled from the core and subjected to comparative Rock-Eval pyrolysis.Following the classical guidelines, the organic abundance, kerogen type, and maturity of source rocks were exhaustively analyzed.Experimental results revealed that organic richness and composition vary significantly under different sedimentary backgrounds, which in turn leads to differential hydrocarbon generation. The combination of hydrocarbon generation, transport, and expulsion results in peculiar patterns for hydrocarbon accumulation in the Lucaogou Formation.Laminated shales in the Lucaogou Formation serve as both hydrocarbon source rocks and reservoirs, with laminae being migration pathways.Organic-rich dolomites in the Lucaogou Formation have a considerable hydrocarbon-generating capacity and present the characteristics of self-generation and self-storage.However,massive mudstones act purely as hydrocarbon source rocks. 展开更多

Large basins are currently the global focus for geothermal development, with their hydrothermal system being controlled by a variety of factors, such as basement relief and fracture development.Donglihu is located at the north of the Cangxian uplift in the North China Basin, the concentrated geothermal resource development zone in North China. This study systematically collects temperature logging data and long-term dynamic monitoring of water level and water quality as well as group well tracer test data carried out in this area in recent years,on the basis of which the hydrothermal controlling role of the deep hidden faults is systematically analyzed. The results show that the Cangdong fault communicates with different geothermal reservoirs in the shallow part and plays a specific role in the water-heat channel of the local area.As a result, the high-value area of the geothermal temperature gradient in the sedimentary layer of the Donglihu area is distributed around the Cangdong fault. The geothermal reservoir temperature of the Minghuazhen Formation within the influence of the fault is also significantly higher than the regional average, the hydraulic head of different geothermal reservoirs showing a consistent and synergistic trend. However, the water quality has been stable for many years without any apparent changes. This understanding has a particular significance for further deepening understanding of the geothermal genesis mechanism in sedimentary basins and guiding future geothermal exploration and development in the Donglihu area. 展开更多

The Cambrian platform margin in the Tarim Basin boasts favorable source-reservoir-cap assemblages, making it a significant target for hydrocarbon exploration in ultra-to extra-deep facies-controlled for-mations.Of the three major basins in western China,Tarim is the only basin with large-scale platform margin where no exploration breakthrough has been achieved yet. This study determines the vertical and lateral differential evolution of the platform margin(in the Manxi area hereafter referred to as the Cambrian Manxi platform margin)through fine-scale sequence stratigraphic division and a segmented analysis. The platform margin can be divided into the Yuqi,Tahe,Shunbei, and Gucheng segments, from north to south, based on the development of different ancient landforms and the evolutionary process of the platform. The Yuqi and Shunbei segments exhibit relatively low-elevation ancient landforms. Both segments were in a submarine buildup stage during the Early Cambrian, resulting in overall limited scales of their reservoirs. The Gucheng segment features the highest-elevation ancient landforms and accordingly limited accommodation spaces. As a result, the rapid lateral migration of high-energy facies zones leads to the development of large-scale reservoirs with only limited thicknesses. In contrast, the Tahe segment, exhibiting comparatively high-elevation ancient landforms,is identified as the most favorable segment for the formation of large-scale reservoirs. The cap rocks of the platform margin are dominated by back-reef dolomitic flats and tight carbonate rocks formed in transgressive periods.A comprehensive evaluation of source rocks, reservoirs, and cap rocks indicates that the Tahe segment boasts the optimal hydrocarbon accumulation conditions along the platform margin. In this segment, the Shayilike Formation transgressive deposits and the high-energy mound-shoal complexes along the platform margin of the Wusonggeer Formation constitute the optimal reservoir-cap rock assemblage, establishing this segment as the most promising target for hydrocarbon exploration in the platform margin. 展开更多

Coal pore parameters are closely related to macrolithotypes and coal structures, having a large influence over the gas potential and productivity of coalbed methane(CBM).The Middle Jurassic Xishanyao Formation, located in the southern Junggar Basin of northwestern China, has geological conditions with rich CBM resources. The 46 Xishanyao coal samples gathered from the drilling cores and coal mines cover 4 types of macrolithotypes(bright coal 1,semi-bright coal 2,semi-dull coal 3,and dull coal 4)and 2 types of coal structures(primary coal I and cataclastic coal II).Based on a range of pore testing experiments and analytical methods, the dual effects of different macrolithotypes and coal structures on pore structures were intensely studied. The results showed that the specific surface area(SSA)and total pore volume(TPV)of coal samples increased gradually from bright to dull coals. For the same macrolithotypes, the SSA and TPV of the primary coals were lower than those of the cataclastic coals.Generally, the pore structures of bright and semi-bright coals are simpler when compared to semi-dull and dull coals with the same coal structure, whereas cataclastic coals have more complicated pore structure systems than primary coals with the same macrolithotypes. The bright and semi-bright coals have higher vitrinite contents and more endogenous fractures, whereas well-developed structural fractures were identified in cataclastic coals. Therefore, bright and semi-bright coals have better pore connectivity than semi-dull and dull coals with the same coal structure, the pore connectivity of cataclastic coals being slightly better than that of primary coals under the same macrolithotypes. In terms of the CBM adsorption conditions, the eight type samples formed a descending order:Ⅱ-4>I-4>Ⅱ-3>Ⅰ-3>Ⅱ-2>Ⅰ-2>Ⅱ-1>Ⅰ-1,while they ranked as follows when consideration was given to the CBM seepage capacities:II-2>Ⅱ-1>Ⅰ-2>Ⅰ-1>Ⅰ-3>Ⅰ-4>Ⅱ-3>Ⅱ-4.As a result,it could be determined that the bright and semi-bright coals had stronger adsorption capacities, whereas the cataclastic coals had better pore connectivity and seepage capacities.Pore structure characteristics should be analysed under the dual control of different macrolithotypes and coal structures,so that they can provide greater value for guiding CBM exploration and exploitation,as along for preventing underground gas accidents. 展开更多

The Majiagou Formation in the Fuxian area of the southeastern Ordos Basin has undergone a complex diagenetic evolution history under the influence of eustacy and the Caledonian karstification, resulting in several complex reservoir types.Through analyses of mineralogy, petrology, and reservoir geology, three major types of dolomite reservoirs with different genetic mechanisms, including anhydritic moldicdissolved pore type, dolomitic intercrystalline-pore type, and fractured type were identified, and their formation mechanisms and distribution patterns were examined. The aphanocrystalline to very finecrystalline anhydritic dolomite was resulted from Sabhak dolomitization, and is characterized by small size of crystals and high content of anhydrite.Dolomite reservoirs of anhydritic moldic-dissolved pore type were developed in multi-stage dissolution processes and mainly distributed at higher positions of the paleogeomorphology where the filling was weak. The very fine to fine-crystalline dolomite of shoal facies was formed under seepage-reflux dolomitization, and characterized by larger sizes of crystals and well-developed intercrystalline pores.Dolomite reservoirs of intercrystalline-pore type were mainly developed at the lower positions of the paleogeomorphology where bedding-parallel karst dissolution was strong. The fractured dolomite reservoirs, generated by the anhydrite swelling and karst cave collapse, occur in multiple horizons but within limited areas due to multi-stage fillings. 展开更多

The Longshan orogenic belt is located in the southwestern margin of Ordos Basin at the junction zone between the Western Qinling and Northern Qilian orogenic belt.Voluminous Early Paleozoic magmatism in this area is of key significance for determining the Early Paleozoic tectonic evolution and deep crust-mantle structure.Previous studies mainly focused on the Paleozoic granites;the coeval mafic rocks in this area are still poorly understood.A set of Late Silurian intraplate tholeiitic basalts has been discovered in Longshan area, providing key evidence for the mantle source and deep geodynamic background in this area. The Late Silurian Angou basalt has similar geochemical features as intraplate tholeiitic basalt, with high Na_(2)O/K_(2)O ratios(5.22-8.25),enriched in large ion lithophile elements and LREE.In combination with their relatively evolved Sr-Nd isotopic composition[^(87)Sr/^(86)Sr(i)=0.7128-0.7140;ε_(Nd)(t)=-5.55 to-3.40],it is suggested that it originated from decompression melting of metasomatized enriched mantle in extensional setting. These results indicate that the mantle source in the junction zone of the West Qinling-North Qilian orogenic belt evolved from depleted to enriched with the continuation of Proto-Tethys subduction from the Cambrian to the Silurian. These results are of great significance to understanding the genesis of contemporaneous granite and the crust-mantle interaction in the junction zone between the Western Qinling and Northern Qilian orogenic belt. 展开更多

The recent discovery of natural gas within the fifth member of the Xujiahe Formation(T_(3)x_(5))in the Dongfeng area within the Sichuan Basin highlights the significant exploration potential of this member. However, the unconvincing previous understanding of the sedimentary microfacies, combined with a total lack of studies on the sand body architecture and reservoir distribution, hampers the further exploration of this member.Using core data, log curves, and seismic data, along with sedimentary microfacies analysis, this study investigated the interfaces between the sand bodies of various scales in the Dongfeng area.Furthermore, this study explored the morphological characteristics, types, and stacking patterns of these sand bodies and determined the distributions of sand bodies and reservoirs in the area. The results indicate that the first sand group of the T_(3)x_(5) member(T_(3)x^(1)_(5))exhibits delta-front deposits, including subaqueous distributary channels, sheet sands, and interdistributary bays.Seven levels of sand body interfaces are identified in the T_(3)x^(1)_(5) sand group.Among them, the interfaces of the first and second levels were identifed only in cores, those of the third and fourth levels were recog-nizable from cores combined with log curves, while those of the fifth, sixth, and seventh levels were distinguishable using seismic data.Three superimposed subaqueous distributary channel complexes are found in the Dongfeng area.Among them, complex 1 in the northwest exhibits the strongest water body energy, while complex 2 in the south displays the weakest.Complex 2 was formed earlier than com-plexes 1 and 3.Also,complex 1 is further subdivided into three vertically stacked subaqueous distrib-utary channels. The subdivision of sedimentary microfacies in the T_(3)x_(5) member reveals nine lithofacies types.Among them, stacked pancake-shaped,carbonaceous debris-bearing,massive,and cross-bedded medium-grained sandstones are considered favorable lithofacies. These four lithofacies types exhibit high porosity,as well as low natural gamma-ray(GR)values,low-to-medium deep investigate double lateral resistivity(RD),and high interval transit time(AC)on the log curves.Additionally, the reservoir distribution in the Dongfeng area was delineated based on the characterization of the favorable lith-ofacies.This study serves as a guide for future exploration and evaluation of the T_(3)x_(5) member in the Dongfeng area while also augmenting the methodologies for describing tight sandstone reservoirs. 展开更多

The basic geological characteristics of the Qiongzhusi Formation reservoirs and conditions for shale gas enrichment and high-yield were studied by using methods such as mineral scanning, organic and inorganic geochemistry, breakthrough pressure, and triaxial mechanics testing based on the core, logging, seismic and production data.(1)Both types of silty shale, rich in organic matter in deep water and low in organic matter in shallow water, have good gas bearing properties.(2)The brittle mineral composition of shale is characterized by comparable feldspar and quartz content.(3)The pores are mainly inorganic pores with a small amount of organic pores.Pore development primarily hinges on a synergy between felsic minerals and total organic carbon content(TOC).(4)Dominated by Type I organic matters, the hydrocarbon generating organisms are algae and acritarch, with high maturity and high hydrocarbon generation potential.(5)Deep-and shallow-water shale gas exhibit in-situ and mixed gas generation characteristics,respectively.(6)The basic law of shale gas enrichment in the Qiongzhusi Formation was proposed as“TOC controlled accumulation and inorganic pore controlled enrichment”,which includes the in-situ enrichment model of“three highs and one over”(high TOC,high felsic mineral content, high inorganic pore content, overpressured formation)for organic rich shale represented by Well ZY2,and the in-situ+carrier-bed enrichment model of“two highs, one medium and one low”(high felsic content, high formation pressure, medium inorganic pore content, low TOC)for organic-poor shale gas represented by Well JS103.It is a new type of shale gas that is different from the Longmaxi Formation, enriching the formation mechanism of deep and ultra-deep shale gas.The deployment of multiple exploration wells has achieved significant breakthroughs in shale gas exploration. 展开更多

The Kuye River Basin has experienced a rapid depletion of groundwater due to the increased coal production. In this study,by introducing the empirical equations derived from the three zone theory in the coal mining industry in China as a boundary condition,a calculation model was developed by coupling the soil and water assessment tool and visual modular three-dimensional finite-difference ground-water flow model(SWAT-VISUAL MODFLOW).The model was applied to several coal mines in the basin to quantify the groundwater impact of underground mining. For illustration purposes, two underground water observation stations and one water level station were selected for groundwater change simulation in 2009,producing the results that agreed well with the observed data.We found that groundwater level was closely related to the height of the fractured water-conducting zone caused by underground mining, and a higher height led to a lower groundwater level. This finding was further supported by the calculation that underground mining was responsible for 23.20mm aquifer breakages in 2009.Thus,preventing surface subsidence due to underground mining can help protecting the basin's groundwater. 展开更多

The formation of Mesozoic natural gas in the Pengyang area of southwestern Ordos Basin is discussed, from the perspective of microbial community characteristics,in order to clarify the relationship between the origin of natural gas and its associated indigenous microbial community. The types and diversity of indigenous microbial communities associated with the oil reservoir were studied by means of collecting reservoir formation water samples from exploration wells. The indigenous microbial communities in the Chang 8 member of the Yanchang Formation were primarily distributed within Proteobacteria and Firmicutes, including the specific species and genera of Methylobacter,Pseudomonas,Haibacter,Toxobacillus,Acinetobacter and Adura actinomyces. The results of diversity analysis shows that the number of common genes was 5448,while the number of unique genes and information was less. This reflects the fact that the strata in the study area are relatively closed and not invaded by external water sources, which leads to the development of biological community diversity. In conjunction with the analysis of geochemical characteristics of oil and gas reservoirs in this area, this indicates that the study area possesses the necessary geological conditions for microbial degradation. It is the first time that the species and diversity of the indigenous microbial community in the Ordos Basin have been analyzed, showing that microbial degradation is the main cause of natural gas formation here, changes the characteristics of crude oil in this area and provides first-hand information on the impact of indigenous microorganisms on the reservoir. 展开更多

Ecological security provides the basis of maintaining both a sustainable regional ecosystem and economic development. However, few studies have focused on how the features such as topography and geomorphology, lithologic stratigraphic assemblages, and geohazard distribution affect the construction of ecological security patterns and the layout of optimization measures. In order to comprehensively reveal the key areas and key objects of ecological restoration in karst basins, this study takes the Beipan River Basin(BRB)as an example, constructs an ecological security pattern(ESP)based on the methods of morphological spatial pattern analysis(MSPA),landscape connectivity analysis and circuit theory, and lays out the optimization measures in combination with the spatial distribution characteristics of topographic and geomorphological differences and lithological stratigraphic combinations. The results show that 151 ecological sources,343 ecological corridors,121 pinch points and 178 barriers constitute the ESP of the BRB.Lithology is closely related to the spatial distribution characteristics of ecological source sites.Level 1 and 2 ecological sources(The ecological sources were categorized into level 1,level 2,and level 3 source from high to low importance.)are concentrated in the Emeishan basalt region of the upstream and the clastic and impure carbonate rock region of the downstream part of the BRB;level 3ecological sources are concentrated in the carbonate rock region of the midstream.Taking into account the outstanding ecological problems in the basin, and based on the characteristics of lithology and geohazard distribution,we propose the optimization scheme of“three axes, three zones and multiple points”for the ESP and the layout of specific measures of the BRB.The results can provide scientific references for maintaining ecological security maintenance in karst ecologically fragile areas. 展开更多

This study focuses on tuffaceous clastic rocks of the Lower Cretaceous Qingshuihe Formation in the southern margin of Junggar Basin. It aims to explore the influence of sedimentation and parent rock on this kind of reservoir development. The results show that the tuffaceous components formed by the denudation of ultramafic and mafic rocks can transform into chlorite coating or hematite, while those from intermediate rock denudation can be dissolved or transformed into illite.Sedimentary facies and lithofacies are essential in controlling the evolutionary result of tuffaceous components.Matrix-supported medium conglomerate and grain-supported medium-fine conglomerate that developed in the fan delta plain, with a closed original geochemical systems, have been in the oxidizing environment for a long time. The tuffaceous matrices mainly transforms into hematite or illite. These minerals occupy the primary pores and are difficult to dissolve by felsic fluids, which inhibits the development of high-quality reservoirs. The grain-supported sandy fine conglomerate developed in the fan delta front was in the underwater reductive environment with an open original geochemical system. The tuffaceous matrices not only can transform into chlorite coating to strengthen the particle's compaction resistance, but also can be fully dissolved, which promotes the formation of high-quality reservoirs. 展开更多

An integrated study on source rock characterization and hydrocarbon generation potential modeling was conducted for the selected Dingo Claystone,Barrow Sub-basin,Australia.In this study, data were collected solely from two wells represented by the Bambra-1 and Bambra-2 wells. The collected data include those from bulk geochemical analyses of cuttings and sidewall cores sampled from the Late Jurassic Dingo Claystone.Geochemical data obtained from Rock-Eval pyrolysis and gas chromatography(GC)of extracted organic matter were integrated for source rock characterization and the construction of burial history and hydrocarbon generation in the Dingo Claystone. To improve the accuracy of thermal maturity estimations, only samples with S2 greater than 1 were considered due to potential issues with peak integration and uncertainties of Tmax determination in samples with lower S2 values.Furthermore,Rock-Eval data from the Bambra wells may be unreliable due to the contamination of cuttings and side-wall core(SWC)samples by drilling mud additives and natural hydrocarbons, which could impact the reliability of the data for determining thermal maturity. This study reveals that the Dingo Claystone Formation has total organic carbon(TOC)contents ranging from 0.66%to 8.31%.A poor to good hy-drocarbon generation potential is indicated, with a production yield(PY=S_(1)+S_(2))ranging from 1.37 to 10.44 mg HC/g rock.Hydrogen index values vary between 42 and 226 mg HC/g TOC,confirming that the Dingo Claystone is dominantly kerogen TypeⅢ,with minor contributions from typesⅡ/ⅢandⅣ.Thermal maturity ranges from immature to late mature and is mostly in the oil window. This is indicated by T_(max)values of 398-462℃and vitrinite reflectance(Ro,%)of 0.47-1.99.Some samples show sup-pressed T_(max)and a higher production index, which is typical for samples affected by drilling fluids during drilling operations.Additionally, gas chromatography(GC)analyses are used to interpret the paleo-depositional environment showing mixed input between marine and terrestrial origins of the source rocks.One-dimensional basin modeling for the Bambra-1 and Bambra-2 wells was carried out to eval-uate the burial and thermal history of the formation. The transformation ratio suggests that hydrocarbon generation has not reached its peak and is still in an ongoing phase. An indication of hydrocarbon migration can be observed in this formation based on the transformation ratio. The effects of contam-ination warrant further investigation,as it could significantly impact maturity estimates and data reliability. 展开更多

The Zagros Basin in southwestern Iran is a significant source of coal, with numerous coal mines operating in the region.Ensuring the stability of coal mines is crucial for safe and efficient mining operations. This study investigates the time-varying response of rocks and roof resistance in coal mines in the Zagros Mountains using a novel approach that combines numerical simulation, relaxation testing, and rock displacement studies. The results show that rocks exhibit significant time-dependent behavior, with changes in rock mechanical properties over time.A comprehensive viscoelastic-plastic model is devel-oped to accurately describe the time-varying strain-softening response of rocks and simulate laboratory tests. The model integrates the Burgers and strain-softening models, simulating stress relaxation curves and rock displacement over time. The study reveals that the rock mass displays significant nonlinear behavior, with changes in rock mechanical properties over time. The findings of this study highlight the importance of considering the time-varying response of rocks and roof resistance in coal mine stability analysis. The results provide valuable insights into the time-dependent behavior of rock mass in coal mines in Iran, which can inform mining practices and mitigate potential hazards. Results in this study can contribute to developing strategies for improving roof stability and reducing the likelihood of roof collapses. 展开更多

Carbonic acid produced by the dissolution of atmospheric and soil CO_(2)in water is usually the most dominant catalyst for chemical weathering, but a sulfuric aciddriven phenomenon, different from usual, was found in the orogenic belt watersheds dominated by silicate bedrock. This study, rooted in comprehensive field investigations in the Manas River Basin(MRB)north of the Tianshan Mountains, delves into the mechanisms and impacts of sulfuric and carbonic acid as catalysts driving diff erent types of chemical weathering in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt.Quantitative analyses elucidate that carbonate weathering constitutes 52.4%of the total chemical weathering, while silicate and evaporite account for 18.6%and 25.3%,respectively,with anthropogenic activities and atmospheric precipitation having little eff ect.The estimated total chemical weathering rate in MRB is approximately 0.075×10^(6)mol/km^(2)/year.Quantitative findings further suggest that, preceding carbonate precipitation(<10^(4)year),chemical weathering can absorb CO_(2).Subsequently,and following carbonate precipitation(10^(4)-10^(7)year),it will release CO_(2).The release significantly surpasses the global average CO_(2)consumption,contributing to a noteworthy climate impact. This study underscores the distinctive weathering mechanisms, wherein sulfuric acid emerges as the predominant catalyst. The quantity of sulfuric acid as a catalyst is approximately three times that of carbonic acid.Sulfuric acid-driven carbonate rock weathering(SCW)is identified as the sole chemical weathering type with a net CO_(2)release eff ect.SCW CO_(2)release flux(5176 mol/km^(2)/year)is roughly 2.5 times the CO_(2)absorption by Ca-Mg silicate weathering, highlighting the pivotal role of chemical weathering in sourcing atmospheric CO_(2)over the timescales of carbonate precipitation and sulfate reduction.Lastly, this study posits that catalyst and transport limitations are the most plausible critical factors in MRB.The interplay between sulfuric acid and dissolved CO_(2)competitively shapes the types and rates of chemical weathering reactions. 展开更多
