In addition, the adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms were recorded and the results were analyzed to investigate reparative adsorption for Cr(VI) from the polluted Xiangjiang River water. A comparative X-ray analysis shows that the degree of crystallization in the imprinted polymer was significantly weakened, the area of the non-crystalline region was larger. There were more adsorption sites in the imprinted polymer, and the adsorption capacity towards Cr(VI) was increased. The adsorption capacity of the imprinted polymer towards Cr(VI) increased with time and reaches saturation after 8 h. The optimal adsorption time was 4-8 h after the adsorption starting and the optimal pH value for the solution was in the range of 4.5-7.5. When the chitosan reaches saturation, the adsorption capacity achieves a state of equilibrium, and the maximum Cr(VI) extraction rate reaches 33.7%. Moreover, the adsorption capacity of the imprinted polymer towards Cr(VI) increases with increasing chitosan concentration. In this situation, the Cr(VI) extraction rate shows little variation, and the maximum removal rate can reach 98.3%. Furthermore, the Cr(VI) extraction rate increases with an increase in the degree of deacetylation in the chatoyant and chitosan, with the best adsorption effect corresponding to 90% deacetylation. Fitting the adsorption data to the quasi first- and second-order kinetic models yields correlation coefficients of 0.9013 and 0.9875, respectively. The corresponding rate constants for the two models are 0.0091 min-1 and 7.129 g/(mg.min), respectively. Hence, the adsorption using Cr(VI)-imprinted chitosan is more consistent with the second-order kinetics. Comparing the data to Freundlich and Langrnuir adsorption isotherms shows that the latter has a better linear fit and a maximum adsorption capacity of 15.784 mg/g.展开更多

Significant differences of heavy metal removal efficiencies were observed among four activated sludge processes. The removal efficiency for As(75.5%) in the oxidation ditch(OD) process is significantly higher than that in the conventional activated sludge(CAS) process(38.6%) or sequencing batch reactor(SBR) process(51.4%). The mean removal efficiencies for Cu and Ni in the OD process are 90.5% and 46.7%, respectively, while low mean removal efficiencies are observed for Cu(69.9%) and Ni(16.5%), respectively, in the SBR process. The removal efficiencies for Cu and Ni in the OD process are significantly higher than those in the anaerobic-anoxic-oxic(A2-O) process. These results highlight the differences of removal efficiencies for heavy metals in different processes and should be considered when selecting a wastewater treatment process.展开更多

This experiment is carried out at different solid retention time of 5, 10, 30, 70 and 98 days; and fouling behavior of membrane bioreactor is investigated. Average effluent quality is found to be 88.14%-94.38%. The experiment with different hydraulic retention is carried for 3 to 4 days and fouling behavior has been investigated. The effluent quality at different hydraulic retention time of 1, 2, 3, 5, 10 and 24 hours has been investigated. This paper aims to search optimal values of solid and hydraulic retention times at which lower fouling and higher organic removal efficiency can be obtained. This study has been mainly focused on operating parameters rather than microbial structure, effect and analysis of activated sludge to membrane fouling.展开更多

Its performances are studied in simulated air conditions. It is found that the rate of dust removal is dependent on the voltage of the pulse power, the distance between the two dust collecting plates of the electrostatic precipitator, the effective length of the precipitator and the air flow rate in the precipitator, and that of CO removal is affected by the voltage and frequency of the super pulse power, the air flow rate in the reactor and the relative humidity of air. Applying such an cleaner of a proper design to the treatment of polluted air at a flow rate of 7 m/s can achieve the rate of dust removal up to 93 % and that of CO removal up to 72.6 %, which efficiently controls the concentrations of CO and dust under allowable limits. It is implied that the proposed air cleaner is a potential solution to air control in road tunnels, and is prominent for its performances and saving the huge cost of longitudinal ventilation tunnel or vertical vent and ventilation facilities.展开更多

Results show that while the influent COD and NH4^+ -N concentrations are 425.92 -560 mg/L and 64 - 100 mg/L respectively, the corresponding average concentrations of the effluent are 160 mg/L and 55 mg/L, which are 1. 6 and 3.6 times more than the national standards respectively. It demonstrates that the performance of pollutants removal process is inefficient. The analysis of PCR-DGGE profile indicates that the bacterial community structure of the activated sludge in A/O system is species-rich but unstable, and the highest and the lowest similarity coefficients are 36% and 6. 25% respectively, which shows that remarkable community structure evolution exists in the system. The variation of bacterial community structure and pollutants loading influences the removal efficiency of pollutants obviously, and relatively stable com- munity structure leads to the stable operational performance of biological wastewater treatment system.展开更多

The optimum operation parameters for the highest performance were determined. It was found that the hybrid biological reactor worked well for the coke wastewater treatment in terms of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), NH4+ -N and other refractory organic compounds removal efficiencies. Compared with conventional activated sludge system, the removal rate of COD and NH4+ -N and the nitrating rate were higher and more stable in the hybrid biological reactor. In this way, the quality of effluent concentration could reach the first class of integrated wastewater discharge standard (GB8978-1996) (COD ≤100 mg/L).展开更多

Even though TOCs are found at low concentrations in the environment, they often accumulate by biomagnification and bioaccumulation into biological organisms and cause irreversible damages in biological systems through direct or indirect toxic effects such as endocrine disruption and tumour initiation. This manuscript presents the main findings of over fifteen years of research focusing on biological removal of various TOCs found in sewage sludge from urban treatment plants. A special focus of the research was made on microbial processes in complex anaerobic ecosystems. Four families of compounds mostly retrieved in urban plants were studied: the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), the phthalic acid esters (PAEs), and the nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs). It was observed that the microbial capability for removing low amounts of TOCs required a long adaptation time and was often limited by the bioavailability of these compounds. In fact, the overall biodegradation resulted from the numerous interactions existing between the matrix (organic matter) and the microbial ecosystems according to the physico-chemical sorption properties of these compounds. Mechanistic aspects were also tackled in depth and specific models were developed for better understanding the network of interactions between TOCs, microorganisms, and organic matter. These findings could be extrapolated to other ecosystems such as soils and sediments. Finally, it was shown that microbial cometabolism was essential for TOC removal, and the concept of bioavailability was not only dependent on the nature, the level, and the sorption properties of TOCs but was also strongly dependent on the nature and the concentration of the sludge organic matter. Specific parameters were proposed for better evaluating the fate of TOCs in microbial anaerobic processes and technological solutions for efficient removal of these compounds were also proposed.展开更多
