In order to ensure the safety of shipping, the World Maritime Organization has formulated and promulgated a series of maritime conventions, such as the SOLAS Convention. As one of the important members of the maritime convention, it is extremely important for China to accurately understand the maritime convention. As one of the four maritime conventions, the SOLAS Convention is full of complex sentence structure and passive sentences. However, the analysis of translation for passive sentences in maritime texts in China is not systematic. What’s more, it’s necessary for us to do this research. Based on Newmark’s translation theory, this paper analyzes Chinese translation and discusses the translation methods used by translators in the process of translating passive sentences in the SOLAS Convention. It is found that when translating the passive sentences in the SOLAS Convention, translators mainly adopt four translation methods, including translating them into Chinese passive sentences, translating them into Chinese active sentences, translating them by omitting the predicate and translating them into Chinese non-subject sentences. This paper aims to help translators to improve their translation ability, and to make the readers of the Convention understand the content of the Convention more clearly and accurately.展开更多

Considering this situation, the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules, as revised in 2010 was chosen to be the research subject, which provides a comprehensive set of procedural rules that can be used to resolve many types of disputes, such as disputes between commercial parties, disputes between countries, etc. T All parties involved must thoroughly study these rules, making the translation and research of these regulations critically important. As a professional language, the structure of legal English is serious and dignified. In order to effectively analyze the passive sentences of this material, the author has chosen Eugene A. Nida’s functional equivalence theory as a guiding theory. Specifically, the author analyzes the syntactic structure of legal texts according to the classification of translation methods for passive sentences, with a view to filling the gaps in the domestic study of the translation of legal texts. Through this study, the author gained insightful insights. Translators should adopt various translation methods, such as translating English passive sentences into Chinese passive sentences, active sentences, and judgment sentences, after catching the point of a sentence by analyzing the context, in order to achieve equivalence between the source language and the target language.展开更多
