Most of these projects are located in Himalayas, far away from the urban areas. Tunnelling through weak and jointed rock masses such as the one in the Himalayas is a challenging task for the planners, designers, engineers and geologists because of high overburden, thickly vegetated surface, weak, poor and fragile rocks and highly varying geology with the presence of numerous small and big shear zones, faults, etc. Due to these reasons, various tunnelling problems have been faced in the past and are still being encountered. Failures and the problems may be regarded as challenges and opportunities for generating new knowledge base and thereby increasing self-reliance in tunnelling. The experiences of Himalayan tunnelling through weak and fragile rocks covering varying and mixed geology, understanding on tunnelling in squeezing ground conditions and applicability of TBM in Himalayas are presented. It has also been highlighted that the probe holes planning, drilling and monitoring shall be followed seriously to reduce the geological surprises.展开更多

The paper highlighted the drivers of change acting on traditional agricultural landscapes including the threats and barriers hindering biodiversity conservation. The drivers of change are: modem agriculture, tourism, education and outmigration and climate change. The threats are encroachment and land-use change, pollution, replacement of traditional varieties and erosion of indigenous knowledge systems and practices. The barriers to biodiversity conservation include the incapacity of farmers to respond to pressures affecting their traditional farming systems, absence of methodologies for integrating traditional and modem knowledge in biodiversity conservation and the multi-functionality of traditional agriculture not fully captured by the market. The conservation framework to guide stakeholders for in-situ management of biodiversity includes niche market development, revenue generation and cultural restoration. The study made use of data collected during the series of workshops conducted in 2005-2007 covering the Ifugao Rice Terraces of the Philippines. Secondary data from other traditional agricultural systems were integrated to enrich the discussion and write-up of this paper.展开更多

We choose the TMS320LF2407A as the control chip and stepper motor as the executing agency. The equipment controls the movable contact reaching to the assigned position on the magnetic coil quickly and accurately, and outputs the sine-wave voltage steadily along with the network voltage variation though the fuzzy Porportional Integral Derivative(PID) control algorithm of integral separation and incremental mode with setting dead area. The principle of work and the key technique on the electromagnetic regulation and control are introduced in detail in this paper. The experiment result gives a proof for all the algorithm mentioned in this paper.展开更多

Its built-up "Ways" are precedents and subsequents to Western models of existence, chosen, among multiple alternatives, by predecessors whose influence, is shared, today and tomorrow! (2) Use of sustained faith and search for peace for continuous steady and slow evolution (in spite of difficulties) toward the inevitable future--initial belief in Christianity presenting the least worst of existing conditions for human freedom and movement. (3) Let the unwilling remain in the last wagon of the moving train from where they will (without a doubt) regret not moving onwards, but yet happily benefit from progress (such are "trust-busters," leaving the initiatives to the "clearsighted" actors of progress). Note that Time moves on nonetheless. (4) Use of the past (genealogy, track record, and estimation of dates of future evolutions) for its recorded evolutions in time as "launching parameters" (ex. curves...) and for projected advancements in open-ended time, using of historical proofs with world-wide testimony, witness and belie! This would help not only in "down-to-earth" reasoning but also in "above and beyond" anticipation, further down Time's road! Use date and timing references of the past--further historical example and proofs to be extended to the society's extension in the Western World and as a founding basis from which extension throughout the World could be justified (ex. starting with Europe, and without unique or limiting dogmatism). (5) Use of cordiality and diplomacy to ease difficulties of understanding, in spite of hesitation to proceed--"humiliations" of conditions (if necessary)--as the leading "team" has an agreed objective, and these "volonteer followers," so they would be, are trapped strangled by their own leashes. (6) Opening one's generous arms (even if politically motivated) to fraternal and willing brethren, for endulging welcoming attitudes toward the others. This would prepare the road for others in their own progress (toward their progressive) destiny. (7) Open-up multi-culturalism as opposed to the quest for mono-cultural sovereignty! Europe would then evermore be consolidated! (8) Indeed nothing looks like an individual more than another individual! Especially, in need! And it is in needs that appears the essence of humankind!展开更多

The Mashan Miao have adopted various measures for the conservation and effective utilization of the local ecological system and have made great achievements in this area. From the 1950s, their social environment has changed a lot due to political and economic movements. The rocky desertification in the Mashan area has gradually expanded. After the 1990s, relief work was carried out to address the desertification problem, but it was not very effective. We have been doing fieldwork in this area for more than 20 years and from our fieldwork records, we have found that the local Miao people have traditional ecological knowledge and skills that are of irreplaceable valuable for finding a solution for rocky desertification. Using the Miao knowledge we think a feasible way to control this disaster can be found.展开更多
