Thus, it has been recommended that runners who use a rearfoot strike would benefit by changing their footstrike although there is little scientific evidence for suggesting such a change. The rearfoot strike is clearly more prevalent. The major reasons often given for changing to a mid-or forefoot strike are(1) it is more economical;(2) there is a reduction in the impact peak and loading rate of the vertical component of the ground reaction force; and(3) there is a reduction in the risk of a running-related injuries. In this paper,we critique these 3 suggestions and provide alternate explanations that may provide contradictory evidence for altering one's footstrike pattern. We have concluded, based on examining the research literature, that changing to a mid-or forefoot strike does not improve running economy, does not eliminate an impact at the foot-ground contact, and does not reduce the risk of running-related injuries.展开更多

The vertical motion of the lateral sides of the TLP is coupled with surge and constitutes a portion of the pitch motion. Tendons are connected to the sides of the TLP; hence, the total displacement of the lateral sides is related to the total deformation of the tendons and the total axial stress. Therefore, investigating the total vertical response at the sides of the TLP is essential. The coupling between various degrees of freedom is not considered in the Response Amplitude Operator (RAO). Therefore, in frequency domain analysis, the estimated vertical RAO is incomplete. Also, in the time domain, only the heave motion at the center of TLP is typically studied; this problem needs to be addressed. In this paper, we investigate the portion of the pitch motion in the vertical response at the sides of the TLP in both the frequency and time domains. Numerical results demonstrate a significant effect of the pitch motion in the vertical motion of the edges of the TLP in some period ranges.展开更多

Since 1994, the vertical directional solidification (VDS) technique has been employed for the growth of bulk crystals, without the seed, without contact to the ampoule wall, without coating and without external pressure. An automated furnace was designed and fabricated for the controlled temperature gradients, growth conditions and parameters. The typical ingots growths of GaSb have shown the gap of 20 μm-145 μm and mobility μn = 1125 cm^2/V.sec at 300 K. Mobility is highest and five times larger than the attached growths. Dislocation density is the order of 104/cm2 in the conical region, decreases in the direction of growth, and in many crystals reached less than 103/cm2. The spontaneous gap formation due to the meniscus depends on the pressure differences and thermal state. GaSb grown ingots have shown progress in the properties of crystal grown ever, and attributed to reduce thermal stress without contact to the ampoule wall.展开更多

According to the quasi-steady assumption, the governing equation of vertical motion of the cable was derived and the criterion for unstable motion and occurrence mechanism was studied. A comparison was performed between the oscillation responses of the stay cable obtained from calculated model and previous results. The results indicate that the analysis model can reflect the main characteristics of wind-rain-induced vibrationt of the cable which is amplitude- and velocity-restricted, and it is probably related with the periodic vortex shedding of wake flow. It is essential for the occurrence of rain-wind-induced or wind-induced vibration of cable that the derivative of lift coefficient with respect to transient angle of attack is less than zero. When rain-wind-induced vibration occurs, the aerodynamic force has a dual function for the vibration, and the maximum amplitude of stayed-cable is determined by the relative value of aerodynamic exciting force and aerodynamic damping force.展开更多

Sunflower seeds and their kernels were quasi-statically loaded in horizontal and vertical orientations with moisture content in three levels: 3%, 7% and 14%, and size category in three levels: small, medium and large. The obtained results showed that rupture force for both sunflower seed and its kernel decreased with increasing moisture content while the absorbed energy and deformation at rupture point increased for all size categories in both horizontal and vertical loading orientations. Also, seeds in the vertical orientation developed hull cracks at a higher level of force than those loaded in the horizontal orientation. However, for the kernels it was the opposite. In addition, the average forces required to cause kernel rupture were lower (11.64-39.9 N) than those required to rupture the seed (30.06-117.46 N) in both orientations. Seeds loaded in a vertical orientation absorbed more energy (87.67 mJ) prior to rupture than those loaded in the horizontal (46.60 mJ) orientation. However, for the kernels it was the opposite.展开更多

The effective stress state changes due to the resulting pore pressure change and therefore, the strength and stiffness of the soil will change. In this work, the finite element method is utilized as a tool for the analysis of pile-soil systems in undrained condition. The computer program CRISP was developed to suit the problem requirements. CRISP uses the finite element technique and allows predictions to be made of ground deformation using critical state theories. Eight-node isoparametric element was added to the program in addition to the slip element. A pile loading problem was solved in which the pile-soil system is analyzed in undrained condition. The pile is modelled as elastic-plastic material, while the soil is assumed to follow the modified Cam clay model. During undrained loading condition, the settlement values increase by 22% when slip elements are used. The surface settlement increases by about three times when the load is doubled and the surface settlement at all points increases when using slip elements due to the mode of motion which allows smooth movement of the adjacent soil with respect to the pile. The vertical displacement increases as the distance decreases from the pile and negligible values are obtained beyond 10D (where D is the pile diameter) from the center of the pile and these values are slightly increased when slip elements are used. The vertical effective stress along a section at a distance D from the pile center is approximately the same for all load increments and lower values of effective vertical stress can be obtained when slip elements are used.展开更多
