By employing the first-principles pseudopotential plane-wave method, the physical properties of zincblende ZnO are investigated in comparison with those of the common wurtzite structure. Zincblende ZnO is predicted to be a direct gap semiconductor. Compared to the wurtzite structure, the zincblende ZnO is characterized by smaller bandgap and pressure coefficient, larger electron effective mass, increasing static dielectric constants and more covalent bonding. Furthermore, the optical properties including dielectric function and energy loss function of zincblende ZnO were obtained and analysed with some features. These aspects reveal promising applications of zincblende ZnO in optoelectronic devices. 展开更多

Sn-doped Ge2Sb2Te5 thin films deposited on Si(100)/SiO2 substrates by rf magnetron sputtering are investigated by a differential scanning calorimeter, x-ray diffraction and sheet resistance measurement. The crystallization temperatures of the 3.58 at.%, 6.92 at.% and 10.04 at.% Sn-doped Ge2Sb2Te5 thin films have decreases of 5.3, 6.1 and 0.9℃, respectively, which is beneficial to reduce the switching current for the amorphous-to-crystalline phase transition. Due to Sn-doping, the sheet resistance of crystalline Ge2Sb2Te5 thin films increases about 2-10 times, which may be useful to reduce the switching current for the amorphous-to-crystalline phase change. In addition, an obvious decreasing dispersibility for the sheet resistance of Sn-doped Ge2Sb2Te5 thin films in the crystalline state has been observed, which can play an important role in minimizing resistance difference for the phase-change memory cell element arrays. 展开更多

A discrete dipole approximation (DDA) aided design method is proposed to determine the parameters of nanostructure arrays. The relationship between the thickness, period and extinction efficiency of nanostructure arrays for the given shape can be calculated using the DDA. Based on the calculated curves, the main parameters of the nanostructure arrays such as thickness and period can be determined. Using this aided method, a rhombic sliver nanostructure array is designed with the determinant parameters of thickness (40 nm) and period (440 nm). We further fabricate the rhombic sliver nanostructure arrays and testify the character of the extinction spectra. The obtained extinction spectra is within the visible range and the full width at half maximum is 99nm, as is expected. 展开更多

The thermoelectric compound TiS2 is studied by using the full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave method on the density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) as well as the on-site Coulomb interaction correction (+U). The Seebeck coefficient of TiS2 is calculated based on the electronic structure obtained within the GGA under the consideration of the on-site Coulomb interaction. The calculated Seebeck coefficient at 300K shows that Coulomb interaction U in the range of 4.97-5.42eV is important to reproduce the experimental data. The obtained energy gap Eg around 0.05 eV indicates that TiS2 is an indirect narrow-gap semiconductor. 展开更多

Based on the Fresnel-Kirchhoff diffraction theory, we build up a Gaussian diffraction model of metal-oxide-type super-resolution near field structure (super-liENS), which can describe far field optical properties. The spectral contrast induced by refractive index and the structural changes in AgOg, PtOx and PdOz thin films, which are the key functional layers in super-RENS, are studied by using this model. Comparison results indicate that the spectral contrast depends intensively on the laser-induced distribution and change of the refractive index in the metal-oxide films. The readout mechanism of the metal-oxide-type super-RENS optical disc is further clarified. This Gaussian diffraction model can be used as a simple and effective method for choosing proper active materials in super-RENS. 展开更多

After heat treatment at high te... We report on transparent Ni^2+-doped MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 glass ceramics with broadband infrared luminescence. Ni^2+-doped MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 glass is prepared by using the conventional method. After heat treatment at high temperature, MgAl2O4 crystallites are precipitated, and their average size is about 4.3 nm. No luminescence is detected in the as-prepared glass sample, while broadband infrared luminescence centred at around 1315 nm with full width at half maximum (FWHM) of about 300 nm is observed from the glass ceramics. The observed infrared emission could be attributed to the ^3T2g(^3F)→^3A2g(^3F) transition of octahedral Ni^2+ ions in the MgAl2O4 crystallites of the transparent glass ceramics. The product of the fluorescence lifetime and the stimulated emission cross section is about 1.6×10^-24 s cm^2. 展开更多

Planar polymer multi-model waveguides doped with Ag nano-particles and rhodamine B are fabricated and investigated by the spectroscopy analysis method as well as the M-line method. Experimental results shown that fluorescence enhancement occurs when excited by a wide band wavelength with Ag nano-particle concentration at a certain level. The maximum enhancement factor in our experiment is obtained to be about 3.8 when excited by 350 nm. Our study may have potential applications in polymers optical elements, such as polymer waveguide lasers and amplifiers. 展开更多

Microstructure modification of silicon nanograins embedded in silicon nitride films by introducing hydrogen reactant in the plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition process and their optical properties are analysed using Raman scattering, optical absorption and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. It is found that the silicon nanograins embedded in the silicon nitride (SiNx) matrix are transformed into silicon nanocrystals and the optical properties of the films change dramatically when introducing H2 into Ar-sustained plasma. The optical absorption coefficient of the films within the band gap decreases by about one order of magnitude and the PL intensity increases significantly, compared with that without hydrogen introduction. These results suggest that atomic hydrogen in the plasma has the function of crystallizing silicon nanograins and passivating defects at the silicon nanograins/SiNx interface. 展开更多

The samples of europium ions doped titanium dioxide (Eu^3+/TiO2) nanocrystals are synthesized by a modified sol-gel method with hydrothermal treatment. The x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy are used to characterize the sample. The temperature-dependent fluorescence emission effect of Eu^3+-doped samples is investigated. It is found that under the excitation of 514.5nm light, the emission intensity of Eu^3+ reaches a maximum value at 450K among various Eu^3+ dopant concentrations in Eu^3+ /TiO2 nanocrystals. The variation of the emission intensity may be attributed to the photon-assist absorption and the temperature-quenching effect. 展开更多

We report that the composites of ZnO/porous Si (PS) can exhibit intensively white photoluminescence (PL) under proper excitation wavelength. The PS sample is formed by electrochemical anodization of n-type (111) silicon. ZnO films are then deposited on the PS surface by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). ZnO is transparent in the visible region, so the red PL from PS can be transmitted through the ZnO films. White PL from the ZnO layer on PS can be obtained, which consists of blue-green emission from ZnO and red emission from PS. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern shows that the ZnO films deposited on PS surface are non-crystalline. Due to the roughness of the PS surface, some cracks appear in the ZnO films, which could be seen from the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. 展开更多

The composition, elastic strain and structural defects of InCaN/CaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) are comparatively investigated by using x-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy and Rutherford backscattering/channelling. The InGaN well layers are fully strained on CaN, i.e. the degree of relaxation is zero. The multilayered structure has a clear defined periodic thickness and abrupt interfaces. The In composition is deduced by XRD simulation. We show how the periodic structure, the In composition, the strain status and the crystalline quality of the InGaN/GaN MQ, Ws can be determined and cross-checked by various techniques. 展开更多

The equilibrium lattice constant, bulk modulus and its pressure derivative are obtained by fitting the calculated total energy to the third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state. The band structure along the higher symmetry axes in the Brillouin zone, the density of states (DOS) and the partial density of states (PDOS) are presented. We demonstrate a 511 W laser diode pumped composite Nd:YAG ceramic laser. The optical pumping system is consisted of five laser diode stacked arrays arranged in a pentagonal shape around the ceramic rod whose size is φ6.35×144mm. When the pumping power is 1600 W, the cw laser output up to 511 W at 1064nm can be obtained with a linear piano-piano cavity, and the optical-to-optical efficiency is 31.9%. To our knowledge, this is the highest value of laser output by using a newly invented composite Nd:YAG ceramic rod as the gain medium. 展开更多

The Gaussian line shape is used to approximate the size distribution of QDs. Its mean volume and the standard full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the PL spectrum. size deviation are well correlated with the peak and The experimental PL spectrum is well reproduced by the theoretical model based on the effect mass approximation including the size distribution without any adjustable parameters. Compared with the standard size deviation value σ = 9 × 10^-2 determined by atomic force microscopic method a small value σ = 7 × 10^-2 is obtained by the best fitting process from the measured and calculated PL spectra. 展开更多

The observed infrared emission could be attributed to the ^3T2(F) → ^3A2(F) transition of octahedral Ni^2+ ions in petalite-type crystallites. Photoluminescence (PL) is investigated at 295K. Abnormal PL properties of an unusual sharp emission at 485 nm and a broad ultraviolet emission which are different from the other works of ZnO PL before are observed. Field emission scanning electronic microscopy and transmission electron microscopy results show that the length of Zn 0 nanowires is nearly 5μm and their diameter is about 70 nm. X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction results reveal that the ZnO nanowires are a polycrystalline structure. 展开更多

A FT-IR spectrometer, 900 UV/VIS/NIR spectrophotometer, atomic force microscope, and ellipsometer are employed to investigate microstructure and optical properties of the films fired at different temperatures. The results show that the films with high transmittance and low surface roughness could be obtained at the heat-treatment temperature of 150℃, the refractive index and thickness of the film are 1.413, 2.11μm, respectively. Higher temperatures (350℃, 550℃) change the film microstructure severely, and then decrease the transmittance of the films, 展开更多

We investigate the properties of light emission from amorphous-Si:H/SiO2 and nc-Si/SiO2 multilayers (MLs). The size dependence of light emission is well exhibited when the a-Si:H sublayer thickness is thinner than... We investigate the properties of light emission from amorphous-Si:H/SiO2 and nc-Si/SiO2 multilayers (MLs). The size dependence of light emission is well exhibited when the a-Si:H sublayer thickness is thinner than 4 nm and the interface states are well passlvated by hydrogen. For the nc-Si/Si02 MLs, the oxygen modified interface states and nanocrystalline silicon play a predominant role in the properties of light emission. It is found that the light emission from nc-Si/SiO2 is in agreement with the model of interface state combining with quantum confinement when the size of nc-Si is smaller than 4 nm. The role of hydrogen and oxygen is discussed in detail. 展开更多

A polydisperse sphere model with the complex refractive index is employed to describe the propagation of light in biological tissue. The scattering coefficient, absorption coefficient and scattering phase function are calculated. At the same time, the inverse problem on retrieving the particles size distribution, imaginary part of the refractive index and number density of scatterers is investigated. The result shows that the retrieval scheme together with the Chahine algorithm is effective in dealing with such an inverse problem. It is also clarified that a group of parameters including the scattering coefficient, absorption coefficient and phase function are associated with another group including the refractive index, particle size distribution and number density of scatterers, which is a problem described in two different ways and the anisotropy factor is not an independent variable, but is determined by the phase function. 展开更多
