In this manuscript,we propose an analytical equivalent linear viscoelastic constitutive model for fiber-reinforced composites, bypassing general computational homogenization. The method is based on the reduced-order homogenization(ROH)approach. The ROH method typically involves solving multiple finite element problems under periodic conditions to evaluate elastic strain and eigenstrain influence functions in an‘off-line’stage,which offers substantial cost savings compared to direct computational homogenization methods.Due to the unique structure of the fibrous unit cell,“off-line”stage calculation can be eliminated by influence functions obtained analytically.Introducing the standard solid model to the ROH method enables the creation of a comprehensive analytical homogeneous viscoelastic constitutive model. This method treats fibrous composite materials as homogeneous, anisotropic viscoelastic materials, significantly reducing computational time due to its analytical nature. This approach also enables precise determination of a homogenized anisotropic relaxation modulus and accurate capture of various viscoelastic responses under different loading conditions.Three sets of numerical examples, including unit cell tests,three-point beam bending tests, and torsion tests, are given to demonstrate the predictive performance of the homogenized viscoelastic model.Furthermore, the model is validated against experimental measurements, confirming its accuracy and reliability. 展开更多

A novel Mg^(-1)0Li-3Al(wt.%,LA103)matrix composite reinforced by ex situ micron TiB_(2) particles was developed in the present study. The ball milling and cold pressing pretreatment of the reinforcements made it feasible to prepare this material under stir casting conditions with good dispersion. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites prepared by different pretreatment methods were analyzed in detail. The TiB_(2) particles in the Al-TiB_(2)/LA103 composite using the pretreatment process were uniformly distributed in the microstructure due to the formation of highly wettable core-shell units in the melt.Compared with the matrix alloys, the Al-TiB_(2)/LA103 composite exhibited effective strength and elastic modulus improvements while maintaining acceptable elongation. The strengthening effect in the composites was mainly attributed to the strong grain refining effect of TiB2.This work shows a balance of high specific modulus(36.1 GPa·cm^(3)·g^(-1))and elongation(8.4%)with the conventional stir casting path, which is of considerable application value. 展开更多

It is an important boundary for analysis of rock mass stability. Weak rock zone has been formed in a long geological period, and in this period, various rocks have undergone long-term consolidation of geostatic stress and tectonic stress; therefore, under in-situ conditions, their density and modulus of deformation are relatively high. Due to its fragmentary nature, once being exposed to the earth's surface, the structure of weak rock zone will soon be loosened, its density will be reduced, and its modulus of deformation will also be reduced significantly. Generally, weak rock zone can be found in large construction projects, especially in the dam foundation rocks of hydropower stations. These rocks cannot be eliminated completely by excavation. Furthermore, all tests nowadays are carried out after the exposure of weak rock zone, modulus of deformation under in-situ conditions cannot be revealed. In this paper, a test method explored by the authors has been introduced. This method is a whole multilayered medium deformation method. It is unnecessary to eliminate the relatively complete rocks covering on weak rock zone. A theoretical formula to obtain the modulus of deformation in various mediums has also been introduced. On-site comparative trials and indoor deformation modulus tests under equivalent density conditions have been carried out. We adopted several methods for the prediction researches of the deformation modulus of weak rock zone under in-situ conditions, and revealed a fact that under in-situ conditions, the deformation modulus of weak rock zone are several times higher than the test results obtained after the exposure. In a perspective of geological engineering, the research findings have fundamentally changed peoples' concepts on the deformation modulus of weak rock zone, provided important theories and methods for precise definition of deformation modulus of deep weak rock zone under cap rock conditions, as well as for reasonable engineering applications. 展开更多

Elastic moduli,e.g.shear modulus G and bulk modulus K,are important parameters of geotechnical materials, which are not only the indices for the evaluation of the deformation ability of soils but also the important basic parameters for the development of the constitutive models of geotechnical materials. In this study,a series of triaxial loading-unloading-reloading shear tests and isotropic loading-unloadingreloading tests are conducted to study several typical mechanical properties of coral calcareous sand(CCS),and the void ratio evolution during loading, unloading and reloading. The test results show that the stress-strain curves during multiple unloading processes are almost parallel, and their slopes are much greater than the deformation modulus at the initial stage of loading. The relationship between the confining pressure and the volumetric strain can be defined approximately by a hyperbolic equation under the condition of monotonic loading of confining pressure.Under the condition of confining pressure unloading, the evolution of void ratio is linear in the e-lnp0 plane, and these lines are a series of almost parallel lines if there are multiple processes of unloading.Based on the experimental results,it is found that the modified Hardin formulae for the elastic modulus estimation have a significant deviation from the tested values for CCS.Based on the experimental results,it is proposed that the elastic modulus of soils should be determined by the intersection line of two spatial surfaces in the G/K-e-p’/pa space(pa:atmosphere pressure).“Ye formulation”is further proposed for the estimation of the elastic modulus of CCS.This new estimation formulation for soil elastic modulus would provide a new method to accurately describe the mechanical behavior of granular soils. 展开更多

An exquisite mesostructure model was presented to predict the effective elastic modulus of concrete,in which concrete is realized as a four-phase composite material consisting of coarse aggregates, mortar matrix, interfacial transition zone(ITZ),and initial defects. With the three-dimensional(3D)finite element(FE)simulation, the highly heterogeneous composite elastic behavior of concrete was modeled, and the predicted results were compared with theoretical estimations for validation.Monte Carlo(MC)simulations were performed with the proposed mesostructure model to investigate the various factors of initial defects influencing the elastic modulus of concrete, such as the shape and concentration(pore volume fraction or crack density)of microspores and microcracks. It is found that the effective elastic modulus of concrete decreases with the increase of initial defects concentration, while the distribution and shape characteristics also exert certain influences due to the stress concentration caused by irregular inclusion shape. 展开更多

All-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries(ASSLSBs) have become one of the most potential candidates for the next-generation high-energy systems due to their intrinsic safety and high theoretical energy density. However, PEO-based ASSLSBs face the dilemma of insufficient Coulombic efficiency and long-term stability caused by the coupling problems of dendrite growth of anode and polysulfide shuttle of cathode. In this work, 1,3,5-trioxane(TOX) is used as a functional additive to design a PEO-based composite solidstate electrolyte(denoted as TOX-CSE), which realizes the stable long-term cycle of an ASSLSB. The results show that TOX can in-situ decompose on the anode to form a composite solid electrolyte interphase(SEI) layer with rich-organic component. It yields a high average modulus of 5.0 GPa, greatly improving the mechanical stability of the SEI layer and thus inhibiting the growth of dendrites. Also, the robust SEI layer can act as a barrier to block the side reaction between polysulfides and lithium metal. As a result, a Li-Li symmetric cell assembled with a TOX-CSE exhibits prolonged cycling stability over 2000 h at 0.2 m A cm^(-2). The ASSLSB also shows a stable cycling performance of 500 cycles at 0.5 C.This work reveals the structure–activity relationship between the mechanical property of interface layer and the battery's cycling stability. 展开更多

To enhance the Young’s modulus(E)and strength of titanium alloys,we designed titanium matrix composites with intercon-nected microstructure based on the Hashin-Shtrikman theory.According to the results, the in-situ reaction yielded an interconnected microstructure composed of Ti_(2)C particles when the Ti_(2)C content reached 50vol%.With widths of 10 and 230 nm,the intraparticle Ti lamellae in the prepared composite exhibited a bimodal size distribution due to precipitation and the unreacted Ti phase within the grown Ti_(2)C particles. The composites with interconnected microstructure attained superior properties, including E of 174.3 GPa and ultimate flexural strength of 1014 GPa.Compared with that of pure Ti,the E of the composite was increased by 55% due to the high Ti_(2)C content and interconnected microstructure. The outstanding strength resulted from the strong interfacial bonding,load-bearing capacity of interconnected Ti_(2)C particles, and bimodal intraparticle Ti lamellae, which minimized the average crack driving force.Interrupted flexural tests revealed preferential crack initiation along the{001}cleavage plane and grain boundary of Ti_(2)C in the region with the highest tensile stress. In addition, the propagation can be efficiently inhibited by interparticle Ti grains, which prevented the brittle fracture of the composites. 展开更多

To evaluate the regularity of resilient modulus for hot-mix asphalt(HMA) under large temperature fluctuations, back propagation(BP) neural network technology was used to analyze the continuous change of HMA resilient modulus.Firstly, based on the abundant data, the training model of HMA resilient modulus was established by using BP neural network technology.Subsequently,BP neural network prediction and regression analysis were performed, and the prediction model of HMA resilient modulus at different temperatures(-50℃ to 60℃) was obtained, which fully considered multi-factor and nonlinearity. Finally, the fitted theoretical model can be used to evaluate the HMA performance under the condition of large temperature fluctuations, and the rationality of theoretical model was verified by taking Harbin region as an example. It was found that the relationship between HMA resilient modulus and temperatures can be described by inverse tangent function. And the key parameters of theoretical model can be used to evaluate the continuous change characteristics of HMA resilient modulus with large temperature fluctuations. The results can further improve the HMA performance evaluation system and have certain theoretical value. 展开更多

This study introduces and evaluates a novel artificial hummingbird algorithm-optimised boosted tree(AHAboosted)model for predicting the dynamic modulus(E*)of hot mix asphalt concrete.Using a substantial dataset from NCHRP Report-547,the model was trained and rigorously tested.Performance metrics, specifically RMSE,MAE,and R2,were employed to assess the model's predictive accuracy, robustness, and generalisability. When benchmarked against well-established models like support vector machines(SVM)and gaussian process regression(GPR),the AHA-boosted model demonstrated enhanced performance. It achieved R2 values of 0.997 in training and 0.974 in testing, using the traditional Witczak NCHRP 1-40D model inputs.Incorporating features such as test temperature, frequency, and asphalt content led to a 1.23%increase in the test R2,signifying an improvement in the model's accuracy. The study also explored feature importance and sensitivity through SHAP and permutation importance plots, highlighting binder complex modulus|G*|as a key predictor.Although the AHA-boosted model shows promise,a slight decrease in R2 from training to testing indicates a need for further validation.Overall, this study confirms the AHA-boosted model as a highly accurate and robust tool for predicting the dynamic modulus of hot mix asphalt concrete, making it a valuable asset for pavement engineering. 展开更多

To efficiently predict the mechanical parameters of granular soil based on its random micro-structure,this study proposed a novel approach combining numerical simulation and machine learning algorithms.Initially,3500 simulations of one-dimensional compression tests on coarse-grained sand using the three-dimensional(3D)discrete element method(DEM)were conducted to construct a database. In this process, the positions of the particles were randomly altered, and the particle assemblages changed.Interestingly, besides confirming the influence of particle size distribution parameters, the stress-strain curves differed despite an identical gradation size statistic when the particle position varied.Subsequently, the obtained data were partitioned into training, validation, and testing datasets at a 7:2:1 ratio. To convert the DEM model into a multi-dimensional matrix that computers can recognize, the 3D DEM models were first sliced to extract multi-layer two-dimensional(2D)cross-sectional data.Redundant information was then eliminated via gray processing, and the data were stacked to form a new 3D matrix representing the granular soil’s fabric.Subsequently, utilizing the Python language and Pytorch framework,a 3D convolutional neural networks(CNNs)model was developed to establish the relationship between the constrained modulus obtained from DEM simulations and the soil’s fabric. The mean squared error(MSE)function was utilized to assess the loss value during the training process. When the learning rate(LR)fell within the range of 10-5e10-1,and the batch sizes(BSs)were 4,8,16,32,and 64,the loss value stabilized after 100 training epochs in the training and validation dataset. For BS?32 and LR?10-3,the loss reached a minimum. In the testing set,a comparative evaluation of the predicted constrained modulus from the 3D CNNs versus the simulated modulus obtained via DEM reveals a minimum mean absolute percentage error(MAPE)of 4.43%under the optimized condition, demonstrating the accuracy of this approach. Thus,by combining DEM and CNNs,the variation of soil’s mechanical characteristics related to its random fabric would be efficiently evaluated by directly tracking the particle assemblages. 展开更多

This study aims to quantify the susceptibility of granular materials used in pavements to changes in moisture content and propose a correlation model to incorporate this susceptibility into seasonal analyses. The fines content and the percentage of fractured coarse aggregates were identified as direct indicators of the resilient modulus susceptibility to changes in water content. The results showed that the percentage of fractured coarse aggregates particles(FR)has a more significant impact on the resilient modulus(Er)of crushed granular materials used in pavement construction than the combined indicator of the fines content and sample volumetrics(nf).Crushed granular materials with a higher percentage of fractured coarse aggregates are relatively insensitive to changes in the degree of saturation, but become more sensitive as the fine fraction porosity decreases. An adjusted model was proposed based on the existing formulation, but considers a complex parameter to describe and adjust the sensitivity of base granular materials to variations in moisture content with respect to fabrication charac-teristics,fines content and volumetric properties. The model shows that the variation of Er values is below10%for fully crushed granular materials. However,it reaches approximately±12%for materials with 75%of crushed coarse aggregates andþ40%and-25%for materials with FR=50%.This model could help select good ag-gregates characteristics and adjust grain-size distribution for environments where significant moisture content variations can occur in the pavement system, such as in the Province of Quebec(Canada). As it is based on pa-rameters that can be easily determined or estimated,it also represents a valuable tool for detailed design and analysis that can consider material characteristics. 展开更多

The ceramic thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) play an increasingly important in advanced gas turbine engines because of their ability to further increase the engine operating temperature and reduce the cooling, thus help achieve future engine low emission, high efficiency and improve the reliability goals. Currently, there are two different processes such as the plasma spraying (PS) and the electron beam-physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) techniques. The PS coating was selected to test the elastic modulus. Using the nanoindentation and resonant frequency method, the mechanical properties of ceramic top-coat were measured in-situ. According to the theory of the resonant frequency and composite beam, the testing system was set up including the hardware and software. The results show that the accurate characterization of the elastic properties of TBCs is important for stress-strain analysis and failure prediction. The TBCs systems are multi-layer material system. It is difficult to measure the elastic modulus of top-coat by tensile method. The testing data is scatter by nanoindentation method because of the microstructure of the ceramic top-coat. The elastic modulus of the top-coat between 20?1 150 ℃ is obtained. The elastic modulus is from 2 to 70 GPa at room temperature. The elastic modulus changes from 62.5 GPa to 18.6 GPa when the temperature increases from 20 ℃ to 1 150 ℃. 展开更多

The rich resources and unique environment of the Moon make it an ideal location for human expansion and the utilization of extraterrestrial resources.Oxygen, crucial for supporting human life on the Moon, can be extracted from lunar regolith, which is highly rich in oxygen and contains polymetallic oxides. This oxygen and metal extraction can be achieved using existing metallurgical techniques.Furthermore, the ample reserves of water ice on the Moon offer another means for oxygen production. This paper offers a detailed overview of the leading technologies for achieving oxygen production on the Moon, drawing from an analysis of lunar resources and environmental conditions. It delves into the principles, processes, advantages, and drawbacks of water-ice electrolysis,two-step oxygen production from lunar regolith, and one-step oxygen production from lunar regolith. The two-step methods involve hydrogen reduction, carbothermal reduction, and hydrometallurgy, while the one-step methods encompass fluorination/chlorination,high-temperature decomposition, molten salt electrolysis, and molten regolith electrolysis(MOE).Following a thorough comparison of raw materials, equipment, technology, and economic viability,MOE is identified as the most promising approach for future in-situ oxygen production on the Moon.Considering the corrosion characteristics of molten lunar regolith at high temperatures, along with the Moon's low-gravity environment, the development of inexpensive and stable inert anodes and electrolysis devices that can easily collect oxygen is critical for promoting MOE technology on the Moon. This review significantly contributes to our understanding of in-situ oxygen production technologies on the Moon and supports upcoming lunar exploration initiatives. 展开更多

Low-to medium-maturity oil shale resources display substantial reserves, offering promising prospects for in-situ conversion inChina. Investigating the evolution of the mechanical properties of the reservoir and caprock under in-situ high-temperature and confine-ment conditions is of considerable importance. Compared to conventional mechanical experiments on rock samples after high-temperat-ure treatment, in-situ high-temperature experiments can more accurately characterize the behavior of rocks in practical engineering, thereby providing a more realistic reflection of their mechanical properties. In this study, an in-situ high-temperature triaxial compressiontesting machine is developed to conduct in-situ compression tests on sandstone at different temperatures(25, 200, 400, 500, and 650℃)and confining pressures(0, 10, and 20 MPa). Based on the experimental results, the temperature-dependent changes in compressivestrength, peak strain, elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, cohesion, and internal friction angle are thoroughly analyzed and discussed. Resultsindicate that the mass of sandstone gradually decreases as the temperature increases. The thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity ofsandstone exhibit a linear relationship with temperature. Peak stress decreases as the temperature rises, while it increases with higher con-fining pressures. Notably, the influence of confining pressure on peak stress diminishes at higher temperatures. Additionally, as the tem-perature rises, the Poisson's ratio of sandstone decreases. The internal friction angle also decreases with increasing temperature, with400℃ acting as the threshold temperature. Interestingly, under uniaxial conditions, the damage stress of sandstone is less affected by tem-perature. However, when the confining pressure is 10 or 20 MPa, the damage stress decreases as the temperature increases. This study en-hances our understanding of the influence of in-situ high-temperature and confinement conditions on the mechanical properties of sand-stone strata. The study also provides valuable references and experimental data that support the development of low-to medium-maturityoil shale resources. 展开更多

The mainstream silver recovery has problems such as resource waste, weak silver selectivity, and complicated operation.Here,self-propelled magnetic enhanced capture hydrogel(magnetic NbFeB/MXene/GO,MNMGH)was prepared by self-crosslinking encapsulation method.MNMGH achieved high selectivity(K_(d)=23.31 mL/g)in the acidic range, and exhibited ultrahigh silver recovery capacity(1604.8 mg/g),which greatly improved by 66%with the assistance of in-situ magnetic field. The recovered silver crystals could be directly physically exfoliated, without acid/base additions. The selective sieving effect of adsorption,MNMGH preferentially adsorbed Ag(I),and then selectively reduced to Ag(0),realizing dual-selective recovery. The in-situ magnetic field enhanced selective adsorption by enhancing mass transfer, reactivity of oxygen-containing functional groups.Furthermore, density function theory simulations demonstrated that the in-situ magnetic field could lower the silver reduction reaction energy barrier to enhance the selective reduction.Three-drive synergy system(reduction drive, adsorption drive and magnetic drive)achieved ultrahigh silver recovery performance. This study pioneered an in-situ magnetic field assisted enhancement strategy for dual-selective(adsorption/reduction)recovery of precious metal silver, which provided new idea for low-carbon recovery of noble metal from industrial waste liquids. 展开更多

Accurate acquisition and prediction of acoustic parameters of seabed sediments are crucial in marine sound propagation research. While the relationship between sound velocity and physical properties of sediment has been extensively studied, there is still no consensus on the correlation between acoustic attenuation coefficient and sediment physical properties.Predicting the acoustic attenuation coefficient remains a challenging issue in sedimentary acoustic research. In this study,we propose a prediction method for the acoustic attenuation coefficient using machine learning algorithms, specifically the random forest(RF),support vector machine(SVR),and convolutional neural network(CNN)algorithms. We utilized the acoustic attenuation coefficient and sediment particle size data from 52 stations as training parameters, with the particle size parameters as the input feature matrix, and measured acoustic attenuation as the training label to validate the attenuation prediction model. Our results indicate that the error of the attenuation prediction model is small.Among the three models, the RF model exhibited the lowest prediction error, with a mean squared error of 0.8232,mean absolute error of 0.6613,and root mean squared error of 0.9073.Additionally,when we applied the models to predict the data collected at different times in the same region,we found that the models developed in this study also demonstrated a certain level of reliability in real prediction scenarios. Our approach demonstrates that constructing a sediment acoustic characteristics model based on machine learning is feasible to a certain extent and offers a novel perspective for studying sediment acoustic properties. 展开更多

All-safe liquid-state lithium-ion batteries(ASLS-LIBs) is of great interest as they can potentially combine the safety of all-solid-state batteries with the high performance and low manufacturing cost of traditional liquid-state LIBs. However, the practical success of ASLS-LIBs is bottlenecked by the lack of advanced separator technology that can simultaneously realize high performances in puncturing-tolerability,fire-resistance, and importantly, wetting-capability with non-flammable liquid-electrolytes. Here, we propose a concept of inorganic in-situ separator(IISS) by hybrid-sol physical crosslinking directly onto the electrode surface to address the above challenges. Particularly, the hybrid-sol is designed with silica nanoparticles as the building block and poly(vinylidene difluoride) nanoparticles as the crosslinking agent. The critical factors for controlling the IISS microstructures and properties have been systematically investigated. The advantages of the IISS have been confirmed by its fast wetting with various fireresistant liquid-electrolytes, customizable thickness and porous structures, robust interface with planar or three-dimensional(3D)-structured electrodes, and importantly, unexpected self-adaptability against puncturing. Enabled by the above merits, a fire-resistant ASLS-LIB is successfully assembled and demonstrated with stable electrochemical performance. This sol-crosslinked IISS may open an avenue for the studies on the next-generation separator technology, cell assembling, solid electrolyte processing as well as non-flammable secondary batteries. 展开更多

Poly(ethylene oxide)-based polymer all-solid-state lithium metal batteries(ASSLBs)have received widespread attention due to their low cost, good process ability, and high energy density.Nevertheless, the growth of Li dendrites within polymer solid-state electrolytes damages the reversibility of Li anodes and still impedes their widespread application. One efficient strategy is to construct a superior solid electrolyte interface.Herein,a stable interface enriched with Li3N and LiF is in-situ formed between Li anode and a terna ry salt electrolyte. This terna ry salt electrolyte is innovatively designed by introducing lithium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl)imide(LiTFSI),lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide(LiFSI),and LiNO_(3)to poly(ethylene oxide)matrix.Surface characterization indicates that LiNO3and LiFSI contribute to forming a Li3N-LiF-enriched interface and meanwhile LiTFSI ensures excellent conductivity.Theoretically, among various Li compound components,Li3N has high ionic conductivity, which is beneficial for reducing overpotential, while LiF has high interfacial energy which can enhance nucleation energy and suppress the formation of Li dendrites. The experimental results show that ASSLBs coupled with LiFePO4cathode display extremely excellent cycle stability approximately 2200 cycles at 2 C,with a final and corresponding discharge specific capacity of 96.7 mA h g^(-1).Additionally,a schematic illustration of the working mechanism for the Li_(3)N-LiF interface is proposed. 展开更多

The Guanfang large-scale W deposit is located in the W polymetallic ore concentration area of Bozhushan in southeastern Yunnan,China.Despite extensive research, the fluid evolution process of the deposit remains ambiguous, leading to controversy regarding its genesis. This study conducted a detailed field geological survey, with systematic sampling of the KT6 orebody,to delineate mineralization stages.Fine mineralogy work, including the use of CL images of scheelite,in-situ LA-ICP-MS trace elements, and Sr isotopes, was carried out on diff erent generations of scheelite formed in various stages. The findings identified the evolution of fluids in the mineralization process, shedding light on the genesis of the deposit. The study revealed four mineralization stages at the Guanfang W deposit:prograde skarn stage, retrograde skarn stage,quartz-sulfide stage, and carbonate-fluorite stage.Diff erent generations of scheelite(Sch I,Sch II,Sch III)were observed in the first three stages, displaying distinct chondrite-normalized REE patterns. The REE of Sch I mainly substituted into the Ca site by REE^(3+)+□_(Ca),and there may be a similar substitution of Nb for REE,whereas it is not the main substitution method. The REE of Sch II mainly enter the scheelite lattice in the form of REE 3++Na+,and there may be a substitution of Nb for REE isomorphism. In the early stage,The REE of Sch III was mainly replaced by Nb for REE isomorphism, while in the later stage, the replacement mode of REE^(3+)+□_(Ca)coexisted with it.The Mo content in scheelite, along with the corresponding Eu anomalies in both scheelite and garnet, collectively imply that the ore-forming fluids during various mineralization stages were predominantly oxidizing, with only slight reducibility observed in Sch II.The in-situ Sr isotope ratios of scheelite concentrates ranged from 0.7093 to 0.7153,resembling those of the Bozhushan granite, indicating a relationship between W mineralization and granite. In addition, the Y/Ho ratios of scheelite from various mineralization stages exhibit a narrow range(19-31),with a pronounced correlation between the contents of Y and Ho and a similar trend in their variation. This consistency suggests that the Guanfang deposit has undergone a uniform or comparable evolutionary process, implying a stable ore-forming fluid across diff erent mineralization stages. 展开更多

Estimating weak rock mass modulus has historically proven difficult although this mechanical property is an important input to many types of geotechnical analyses. An empirical database of weak rock mass modulus with associated detailed geotechnical parameters was assembled from plate loading tests per- formed at underground mines in Nevada, the Bakhtiary Dam project, and Portugues Dam project. The database was used to assess the accuracy of published single-variate models and to develop a multivari- ate model for predicting in-situ weak rock mass modulus when limited geoteehnical data are available. Only two of the published models were adequate for predicting modulus of weak rock masses over lim- ited ranges of alteration intensities, and none of the models provided good estimates of modulus over a range of geotechnical properties. In light of this shortcoming, a multivariate model was developed from the weak rock mass modulus dataset, and the new model is exponential in form and has the following independent variables: (1) average block size or joint spacing, (2) field estimated rock strength, (3) dis- continuity roughness, and (4) discontinuity infilling hardness. The multivariate model provided better estimates of modulus for both hard-blocky rock masses and intensely-altered rock masses. 展开更多
