Cracks are important migration channels and storage spaces for oil and gas, and the peripheral cracks in the Ordos Basin have developed extensively after multiple tectonic movements. Using unmanned aerial vehicle oblique photogrammetry technology to obtain field outcrop image data and establish a three-dimensional model for observation, the NEE and NNW fractures are the most developed in the Yanchang Formation of the study area, while the NW and NNE fractures are slightly developed, all of which are high angle vertical fractures and belong to regional structural fractures. The NNW oriented cracks are restricted by the NEE oriented cracks and developed in the late stage. Combined with the analysis of regional geological background, fracture intersection relationship and tectonic stress field, it is considered that there are two stages of fractures in Dongjiahe, namely, the late Indosinian and Yanshanian. 展开更多

The Fenwei Basin, covered by loess, experiences severe ground fissure disasters. These disasters disrupt the continuity of the loess and pose significant threats to engineering construction safety along transportation routes. Nevertheless, the crack characteristics and the influence zone of ground fissures in the loess layer remain inadequately investigated. To effectively prevent and control ground fissure disasters, physical model tests and the PFC(particle flow code) numerical simulation method are used to investigate the crack mechanism of buried ground fissures in the loess layer. The results show that there are two main cracks in the layer profile, which have a Y-shape morphology. As the dip angle of the preset cracks increased from 60° to 90°, the main deformation zone at the surface gradually shifted towards the footwall. The process of crack propagation from depth to surface is divided into five stages. Additionally, the results confirm the accuracy of the width of the rupture zone d2in the footwall calculated by the cantilever beam theory. These findings can offer theoretical guidance for determining the avoidance distance of ground fissures in loess regions, as well as for implementing disaster prevention and corresponding control measures for various stages of buried ground fissure propagation. 展开更多

The recent upsurge in metro construction emphasizes the necessity of understanding the mechanical performance of metro shield tunnel subjected to the influence of ground fissures. In this study,a largescale experiment,in combination with numerical simulation, was conducted to investigate the influence of ground fissures on a metro shield tunnel. The results indicate that the lining contact pressure at the vault increases in the hanging wall while decreases in the footwall, resulting in a two-dimensional stress state of vertical shear and axial tension-compression,and simultaneous vertical dislocation and axial tilt for the segments around the ground fissure. In addition, the damage to curved bolts includes tensile yield, flexural yield, and shear twist, leading to obvious concrete lining damage, particularly at the vault, arch bottom, and hance, indicating that the joints in these positions are weak areas. The shield tunnel orthogonal to the ground fissure ultimately experiences shear failure, suggesting that the maximum actual dislocation of ground fissure that the structure can withstand is approximately 20 cm,and five segment rings in the hanging wall and six segment rings in the footwall also need to be reinforced. This study could provide a reference for metro design in ground fissure sites. 展开更多

Taking the Pusa Collapse in Nayong County,Guizhou Province,China as a case study, this paper investigates the impact of multi-layer coal mining on karst mountains characterized by deep fissures.Based on field investigations and employing discrete element numerical simulations, the deformation and failure mechanisms of karst mountain containing deep and large fissures under multi-seam mining conditions was investigated. The influence of the direction of coal seam extraction and the sequence of extraction between multiple coal seams on the failure modes of karst mountain with deep and large fissures was studied. The results indicate that underground mining primarily manifests in the development of mininginduced fissures in the mountain body, subsidence and deformation of slope masses, and triggering the expansion of existing fissures, further driving overall deformation and damage to the slopes.Deep and large fissures control the deformation and failure modes of the slopes, with closer and longer deep and large fissures near the slope surface exerting greater influence on the slope mass. The impact of mining in the same coal seam direction on the slopes is mainly reflected in the process of slope deformation and failure.Downslope mining directly leads to overall subsidence of the slope mass, squeezing the front and lower parts of the slope mass.Upslope mining initially causes the foot of the slope to sink and the entire slope mass to move outward, and continuous mining leads to overall settlement and downward compression deformation of the slope. The sequence of mining between multiple coal seams mainly affects the overall and local deformation values of the slope mass.Downward mining leads to increased overall subsidence of the slope mass and exacerbates the backward tilt of the slope top. 展开更多

The longitudinal cracks distributed along the dam axis in the corridor of a dam may have potential safety hazards.According to the detection results of crack depth and width and the analysis of monitoring data,a three-dimensional finite element model is established for numerical simulation calculation and the influence of cracks on the safety of dam structure is analyzed from different aspects such as deformation, stress value, and distribution range. The calculation results show that the maximum principal tensile stress value and the location of the dam body are basically independent of the change of crack depth(within 1.0 m).Regarding local stress around the corridor, the high upstream water level causes cracks to deepen, resulting in an increase in the maximum tensile stress near the crack tip and an expansion of the tensile stress region. 展开更多

In this work, the influences of surface layer slurry at different temperatures(10℃,14℃,18℃,22℃)on wax patterns deformation, shrinkage, slurry coating characteristics, and the surface quality of the casting were investigated by using a single factor variable method. The surface morphologies of the shell molds produced by different temperatures of the surface(first)layer slurries were observed via electron microscopy.Furthermore, the microscopic composition of these shell molds was obtained by EDS,and the osmotic effect of the slurry on the wax patterns at different temperatures was also assessed by the PZ-200 Contact Angle detector. The forming reasons for the surface cracks and holes of thick and large ZTC4 titanium alloy by investment casting were analyzed. The experimental results show that the surface of the shell molds prepared by the surface layer slurry with a low temperature exhibits noticeable damage, which is mainly due to the poor coating performance and the serious expansion and contraction of wax pattern at low temperatures. The second layer shell material(SiO_(2),Al_(2)O_(3))immerses into the crack area of the surface layer, contacts and reacts with the molten titanium to form surface cracks and holes in the castings. With the increase of the temperature of surface layer slurry, the damage to the shell surface tends to weaken, and the composition of the shell molds'surface becomes more uniform with less impurities. The results show that the surface layer slurry at 22℃is evenly coated on the surface of the wax patterns with appropriate thickness, and there is no surface shell mold rupture caused by sliding slurry after sand leaching. The surface layer slurry temperature is consistent with the wax pattern temperature and the workshop temperature,so there is no damage of the surface layer shell caused by expansion and contraction. Therefore, the shell mold prepared by the surface layer slurry at this temperature has good integrity, isolating the contact between the low inert shell material and the titanium liquid effectively, and the ZTC4 titanium alloy cylinder casting prepared by this shell mold is smooth, without cracks and holes. 展开更多

The three-phase-lag(TPL)heat conduction model is an accurate representation of the actual heat transfer process. It would be interesting to investigate how the TPL model affects the thermal fracture behavior when there are defects existing in the medium. This paper aims to analyze the thermoelastic responses of two collinear cracks within a functionally graded half-space under thermal loadings by means of the TPL model. The thermoelastic problem is transformed into a series of singular integral equations using the integral transformation methods. The transient temperature and stress intensity factors(SIFs)are obtained through the application of Chebyshev polynomials. The effects of crack spacing and non-homogeneous parameters on the transient thermoelastic responses are presented, and the results of the TPL model are compared with those of the Fourier model,Cattaneo and Vernotte(CV)model, and dual-phase-lag(DPL)model.It is shown that crack spacing and non-homogeneous parameters have important effects on the thermoelastic responses, and the fluctuation phenomenon under the TPL model is the most pronounced due to the existence of the thermal displacement lag term. 展开更多

The fracture behavior of superconducting tapes with central and edge oblique cracks subject to electromagnetic forces is investigated. Maxwell's equations and the critical state-Bean model are used to analytically determine the magnetic flux density and electromagnetic force distributions in superconducting tapes containing central and edge oblique cracks. The distributed dislocation technique(DDT) transforms the mixed boundary value problem into a Cauchy singular integral equation, which is then solved by the Gauss-Chebyshev quadrature method to determine the stress intensity factors(SIFs).The model's accuracy is validated by comparing the calculated electromagnetic force distribution for the edge oblique crack and the SIFs for both crack types with the existing results. The findings indicate that the current and electromagnetic forces are significantly affected by the crack length and oblique angle. Specifically, for central oblique cracks, a smaller oblique angle enhances the risk of crack propagation, and a higher initial magnetization intensity poses greater danger under field cooling(FC) excitation. In contrast, for edge oblique cracks, a larger angle increases the likelihood of tape fractures. This study provides important insights into the fracture behavior and mechanical failure mechanisms of superconducting tapes with oblique cracks. 展开更多

The damage evolution process of non-penetrating cracks often causes some unexpected engineering disasters.Gypsum specimens containing non-penetrating crack(s)are used to study the damage evolution and characteristics under cyclic loading. The results show that under cyclic loading, the relationship between the number of non-penetrating crack(s)and the characteristic parameters(cyclic number, peak stress, peak strain, failure stress, and failure strain)of the pre-cracked specimens can be represented by a decreasing linear function. The damage evolution equation is fitted by calibrating the accumulative plastic strain for each cycle, and the damage constitutive equation is proposed by the concept of effective stress.Additionally,non-penetrating cracks are more likely to cause uneven stress distribution, damage accumulation, and local failure of specimen. The local failure can change the stress distribution and relieve the inhibition of non-penetrating crack extension and eventually cause a dramatic destruction of the specimen. Therefore, the evolution process caused by non-penetrating cracks can be regarded as one of the important reasons for inducing rockburst. These results are expected to improve the understanding of the process of spalling formation and rockburst and can be used to analyze the stability of rocks or rock structures. 展开更多

To explore the effects of freeze‒thaw cycles on the mechanical properties and crack evolution of fissured sandstone, biaxial compression experiments were carried out on sandstone subjected to freeze‒thaw cycles to characterize the changes in the physical and mechanical properties of fissured sandstone caused by freeze‒thaw cycles. The crack evolution and crack change process on the surface of the fissured sandstone were recorded and analysed in detail via digital image technology(DIC).Numerical simulation was used to reveal the expansion process and damage mode of fine-scale cracks under the action of freeze‒thaw cycles, and the simulation results were compared and analysed with the experimental data to verify the reliability of the numerical model. The results show that the mass loss, porosity, peak stress and elastic modulus all increase with increasing number of freeze‒thaw cycles. With an increase in the number of freeze‒thaw cycles,a substantial change in displacement occurs around the prefabricated cracks, and a stress concentration appears at the crack tip.As new cracks continue to sprout at the tips of the prefabricated cracks until the microcracks gradually penetrate into the main cracks, the displacement cloud becomes obviously discontinuous, and the contours of the displacement field in the crack fracture damage area simply intersect with the prefabricated cracks to form an obvious fracture. The damage patterns of the fractured sandstone after freeze‒thaw cycles clearly differ, forming a symmetrical"L"-shaped damage pattern at zero freeze‒thaw cycles,a symmetrical"V"-shaped damage pattern at 10 freeze‒thaw cycles, and a"V"-shaped damage pattern at 20 freeze‒thaw cycles. After 20 freeze‒thaw cycles,a"V"-shaped destruction pattern and"L"-shaped destruction pattern are formed;after 30 freeze‒thaw cycles,an"N"-shaped destruction pattern is formed. This shows that the failure mode of fractured sandstone gradually becomes more complicated with an increasing number of freeze‒thaw cycles. The effects of freeze‒thaw cycles on the direction and rate of crack propagation are revealed through a temperature‒load coupled model, which provides an important reference for an in-depth understanding of the freeze‒thaw failure mechanisms of fractured rock masses. 展开更多

Based on experimental restilts of brittle, intact sandstone under uniaxial compression, the micro-parameters were firstly confirmed by adopting particle flow code (PFC2D). Then, the validation of the simulated models were cross checked with the experimental results of brittle sandstone containing three parallel fissures under uniaxial compression. The simulated results agreed very well with the experimental results, including the peak strength, peak axial strain, and ultimate failure mode. Using the same micro- parameters, the numerical models containing a new geometry of three fissures are constructed to investigate the fissure angle on the fracture mechanical behavior of brittle sandstone under uniaxial compression. The strength and deformation parameters of brittle sandstone containing new three fissures are dependent to the fissure angle. With the increase of the fis- sure angle, the elastic modulus, the crack damage threshold, and the peak strength of brittle sandstone containing three fissures firstly increase and secondly decrease. But the peak axial strain is nonlinearly related to the fissure angle. In the entire process of deformation, the crack initiation and propagation behavior of brittle sandstone containing three fissures under uniaxial compression are investigated with respect to the fissure angle. Six different crack coalescence modes are identified for brittle sandstone containing three fissures under uniaxial compression. The influence of the fissure angle on the length of crack propagation and crack coalescence stress is evaluated. These investigated conclusions are very important for ensuring the stability and safety of rock engineering with intermittent structures. 展开更多

In the present work, uniaxial compressive tests were carried out on limestone-like samples containing two parallel open fissures or cement-infilled fissures with different geometries.Mechanical property and crack behavior of limestone-like samples with two parallel open fissures or cement-infilled fissures were affected by bridge inclination angle and fissure inclination angle.Four types of coalescence of rock bridge for samples containing open fissures or cement-infilled fissures were summarized and classified. The closure of tensile crack was observed in the samples with small fissure inclination angle. This is a new phenomenon which is not mentioned in previous studies.Test results show that the peak strength, crack initiation stress, and coalescence type are different between open fissures and cement infilled fissures. The reason for this phenomenon is that grouting of cement can transfer stress and reduce stress concentration at the flaw tip and rock bridge area. 展开更多

Ensuring the consistency of electrode structure in proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells is highly desired yet challenging because of wide-existing and unguided cracks in the microporous layer(MPL). The first thing is to evaluate the homogeneity of MPL with cracks quantitatively. This paper proposes the homogeneity index of a full-scale MPL with an area of 50 cm~2, which is yet to be reported in the literature to our knowledge. Besides, the effects of the carbon material and surfactant on the ink and resulting MPL structure have been studied. The ink with a high network development degree produces an MPL with low crack density, but the ink with high PDI produces an MPL with low crack homogeneity. The polarity of the surfactant and the non-polarity of polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) are not mutually soluble, resulting in the heterogeneous PTFE distribution. The findings of this study provide guidelines for MPL fabrication. 展开更多

Seismic prediction of cracks is of great significance in many disciplines, for which the rock physics model is indispensable. However,up to now, multitudinous analytical models focus primarily on the cracked rock with the isotropic background, while the explicit model for the cracked rock with the anisotropic background is rarely investigated in spite of such case being often encountered in the earth.Hence,we first studied dependences of the crack opening displacement tensors on the crack dip angle in the coordinate systems formed by symmetry planes of the crack and the background anisotropy, respectively,by forty groups of numerical experiments.Based on the conclusion from the experiments, the analytical solution was derived for the effective elastic properties of the rock with the inclined penny-shaped cracks in the transversely isotropic background.Further,we comprehensively analyzed, according to the developed model, effects of the crack dip angle, background anisotropy, filling fluid and crack density on the effective elastic properties of the cracked rock. The analysis results indicate that the dip angle and background anisotropy can significantly either enhance or weaken the anisotropy degrees of the P-and SH-wave velocities, whereas they have relatively small effects on the SV-wave velocity anisotropy. Moreover, the filling fluid can increase the stiffness coefficients related to the compressional modulus by reducing crack compliance parameters, while its effects on shear coefficients depend on the crack dip angle. The increasing crack density reduces velocities of the dry rock, and decreasing rates of the velocities are affected by the crack dip angle.By comparing with exact numerical results and experimental data,it was demonstrated that the proposed model can achieve high-precision estimations of stiffness coefficients. Moreover, the assumption of the weakly anisotropic background results in the consistency between the proposed model and Hudson's published theory for the orthorhombic rock. 展开更多

The Inner Mongolia mining area in western China are characterized by the development of numerous penetrating fissures, resulting in severe land damage. It is significant to reveal the underlying evolution mechanism and identify treatment timing for restoring the ecological environment. The Guanbanwusu mining subsidence area in Inner Mongolia,China was selected as the research case for this study. The evolution mechanism of different penetrating fissures was revealed by field measurement, physical simulation and theoretical analysis. The treatment timing prediction model for the mining subsidence area was established based on the enhanced Weibull time function. The results show that the ground fissures are mainly step-type and collapse-type fissures. The breaking form of overlying strata determines their vertical opening and horizontal dislocation. The high mining intensity in the western mining area results in a shortened period of dynamic fissure expansion and reduced closure degree. The damage extent of the overlying strata exhibits zoning characteristics both vertically and horizontally. The relative standard deviation of the prediction model is only 3.7%.Concurrently,the prediction model is employed to determine the optimal timing for treatment in the study area, estimated to be 259 days.Subsequently, once this threshold is reached, the study area undergoes treatment and restoration of its e cological environment. This study addresses the knowledge gap in this field by highlighting the interconnectedness between rock strata structure and evolution mechanism of penetrating fissures, thereby providing a method for determining the treatment timing in mining subsidence areas. 展开更多

Heat transfer and temperature evolution in overburden fracture and ground fissures are one of the essential topics for the identification of ground fissures via unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) infrared imager. In this study, discrete element software UDEC was employed to investigate the overburden fracture field under different mining conditions. Multiphysics software COMSOL were employed to investigate heat transfer and temperature evolution of overburden fracture and ground fissures under the influence of mining condition, fissure depth, fissure width, and month alternation. The UAV infrared field measurements also provided a calibration for numerical simulation. The results showed that for ground fissures connected to underground goaf(Fissure Ⅰ), the temperature difference increased with larger mining height and shallow buried depth. In addition, Fissure Ⅰ located in the boundary of the goaf have a greater temperature difference and is easier to be identified than fissures located above the mining goaf. For ground fissures having no connection to underground goaf(Fissure Ⅱ), the heat transfer is affected by the internal resistance of the overlying strata fracture when the depth of Fissure Ⅱ is greater than10 m, the temperature of Fissure Ⅱ gradually equals to the ground temperature as the fissures’ depth increases, and the fissures are difficult to be identified. The identification effect is most obvious for fissures larger than 16 cm under the same depth. In spring and summer, UAV infrared identification of mining fissures should be carried out during nighttime. This study provides the basis for the optimal time and season for the UAV infrared identification of different types of mining ground fissures. 展开更多

Detecting pavement cracks is critical for road safety and infrastructure management.Traditional methods, relying on manual inspection and basic image processing, are time-consuming and prone to errors.Recent deep-learning(DL)methods automate crack detection, but many still struggle with variable crack patterns and environmental conditions. This study aims to address these limitations by introducing the Masker Transformer,a novel hybrid deep learning model that integrates the precise localization capabilities of Mask Region-based Convolutional Neural Network(Mask R-CNN)with the global contextual awareness of Vision Transformer(ViT).The research focuses on leveraging the strengths of both architectures to enhance segmentation accuracy and adaptability across different pavement conditions. We evaluated the performance of theMaskerTransformer against other state-of-theartmodels such asU-Net,TransformerU-Net(TransUNet),U-NetTransformer(UNETr),SwinU-NetTransformer(Swin-UNETr),You Only Look Once version 8(YoloV8),and Mask R-CNN using two benchmark datasets:Crack500 and DeepCrack. The findings reveal that the MaskerTransformer significantly outperforms the existing models, achieving the highest Dice SimilarityCoefficient(DSC),precision, recall, and F1-Score across both datasets.Specifically, the model attained a DSC of 80.04%on Crack500 and 91.37%on DeepCrack, demonstrating superior segmentation accuracy and reliability. The high precision and recall rates further substantiate its effectiveness in real-world applications, suggesting that the Masker Transformer can serve as a robust tool for automated pavement crack detection, potentially replacing more traditional methods. 展开更多

A novel phase-field model for the propagation of mixed-mode hydraulic fractures, characterized by the formation of mixed-mode fractures due to the interactions between fluids and solids,is proposed. In this model, the driving force for the phase field consists of both tensile and shear components, with the fluid contribution primarily manifesting in the tension driving force. The displacement and pressure are solved simultaneously by an implicit method. The numerical solution's iterative format is established by the finite element discretization and Newton-Raphson(NR)iterative methods. The correctness of the model is verified through the uniaxial compression physical experiments on fluid-pressurized rocks, and the limitations of the hydraulic fracture expansion phase-field model, which only considers mode I fractures, are revealed. In addition, the influence of matrix mode II fracture toughness value, natural fracture mode II toughness value, and fracturing fluid injection rate on the hydraulic fracture propagation in porous media with natural fractures is studied. 展开更多

Sustained casing pressure(SCP)is a crucial issue in the oil and gas production lifecycle.Epoxy resins, exhibiting exceptional compressive strength, ductility, and shear bonding strength, have the potential to form reliable barriers. The injectivity and sealing capacity of the epoxy resin is crucial parameters for the success of shallow remediation operations. This study aimed to develop and assess a novel solid-free resin sealant as an alternative to Portland cement for mitigating fluid leakage. The investigation evaluated the viscosity, compressive strength, and brittleness index of the epoxy resin sealant,as well as its tangential and normal shear strengths in conjunction with casing steel. The flow characteristics and sealing abilities of conventional cement and epoxy resin were comparatively analyzed in cracks. The results showed that the application of a viscosity reducer facilitated control over the curing time of the epoxy resin, ranging from 1.5 to 6 h,and reduced the initial viscosity from 865.53 to 118.71 m Pa,s.The mechanical properties of the epoxy resin initially increased with a rise in curing agent content before experiencing a minor decrease. The epoxy resin containing 30%curing agent exhibited optimal mechanical properties. After a 14-day curing period, the epoxy resin's compressive strength reached81.37 MPa,2.12 times higher than that of cement, whereas the elastic modulus of cement was 2.99 times greater than that of the epoxy resin. The brittleness index of epoxy resin is only 3.42,demonstrating high flexibility and toughness. The tangential and normal shear strengths of the epoxy resin exceeded those of cement by 3.17 and 2.82 times, respectively. In a 0.5 mm-wide crack, the injection pressure of the epoxy resin remained below 0.075 MPa,indicating superior injection and flow capabilities.Conversely, the injection pressure of cement surged dramatically to 2.61 MPa within 5 min.The breakthrough pressure of0.5 PV epoxy resin reached 7.53 MPa,decreasing the crack's permeability to 0.02 D,a mere 9.49%of the permeability observed following cement plugging.Upon sealing a 2 mm-wide crack using epoxy resin, the maximum breakthrough pressure attained 5.47 MPa,3.48 times of cement. These results suggest that epoxy resin sealant can be employed safely and effectively to seal cracks in the cement. 展开更多
