Management of incinerated sewage sludge ash(ISSA)and dredged contaminated marine sediments(CMSs)is a great challenge for Hong Kong and other coastal cities due to limited landfilling capacity.The present study investigates the use of high content(20%of sediment by mass)of ISSA in combination with cement/lime for solidification/stabilization(S/S)treatment of CMSs to provide a way to reuse the wastes as construction materials.The results showed that ISSA being a porous material was able to absorb a large amount of water rendering a more efficient solidification process of the marine sediment which normally had a very high water content(w80%).The S/S treatment improved the engineering properties of the sediment,but reduced the workability,especially for the lime-treated samples.Lime can be used to replace ordinary Portland cement(OPC)for better heavy metal immobilization and carbon emission reduction.The hardened sediment samples prepared with 10%of lime and 20%of ISSA could attain a strength of 1.6 MPa after 28 d of curing.In addition,leaching tests confirmed that there was no environmental risk induced by these stabilized materials.The formation of hydrated cementitious compounds including calcium silicate hydrate(CeSeH)/calcium aluminate silicate hydrate(C-A-S-H)/hydrocalumite/calcite was mainly responsible for the strength development in the ISSA/lime-treated sediments. 展开更多

Sensory inputs stimulated by Zusanli(ST36) acupuncture in the abdomen are known to converge in the upper cervical cord. However, it is unclear whether these inputs are subsequently conveyed to the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus and what kind of afferent fibers are involved. We focused on the upper cervical cord, where afferent inputs converge, and detected c-fos expression in oxytocinergic neurons. We found that Zusanli acupuncture therapy effectively elevated intragastric pressure, but inhibited expression of c-fos in oxytocinergic neurons of the paraventricular nucleus in upper cervical cord injured rats. These Zusanli acupuncture effects remained even after complete dorsal cord transection. However, after complete transection of the spinal cord or dorsolateral funiculus, the effects were significantly attenuated and even disappeared. These findings suggest that the paraventricular nucleus is responsible for pooling and integrating signals from the Zusanli acupuncture and sensory information from the intragastric pressure variation, thereby contributing to the regulation of intragastric pressure. The upper cervical cord serves as the key link between ascending and descending pathways, which conveys afferent inputs to the paraventricular nucleus through the dorsolateral funiculus. 展开更多

Due to the limited hydration capacity,solidification/stabilization(S/S)with waste concrete powder(WCP)has a low strength.Carbonation can reduce carbon dioxide(CO_(2))emissions and improve strength of lead-contaminated soil,but its mechanism and environmental behaviors are unclear.In light of this,a comprehensive study was conducted on the compressive strength,lead immobilization,conductivity characteristics,and carbonation mechanism of carbonated Pb-contaminated soils stabilized with WCP compared to calcining 600℃WCP.Results indicated that with carbonation,the compressive strength of the samples was significantly improved at the early stage(1 d),resulting in increased unconfined compressive strength(UCS)by 2.5-5.2 times due to the filling of pores by calcite.It negatively affected the lead immobilization capacity of highly doped(30%)samples,while this effect reversed after 3 d of carbonating due to the reduced alkaline environment.The lead immobilization capacity decreased after 28 d of carbonating due to the cracking of samples and the influence of a lower pH on the solubility of lead-carbonated hydroxide((PbCO_(3))_(2)Pb(OH)_(2)).The water evaporation(saturation<16.8%)led to dry shrinkage cracking and decreased UCS of the samples.Based on this finding,a conductivity model was developed for carbonated and cured samples,accurately predicting changes in saturation levels(R^(2)=0.98).A relationship between conductivity and UCS or lead immobilization capacity was proposed.This research proposed an innovative method for the reduction of CO_(2)emission as well as laid down a theoretical basis for the recovery of WCP and lead-contaminated soils through carbonation. 展开更多

Agronomic effectiveness of recovered phosphate fertilizer produced from incinerated sewage sludge ash

Phosphorus(P)recovery from incinerated sewage sludge ash(ISSA)has been extensively investigated,but insufficient research has been conducted to evaluate the effect of different kinds of recovered phosphate fertilizers(RPFs)on plant growth with respect to the P and heavy metal contents of RPFs.In this study,three kinds of RPFs,precipitated calcium phosphate fertilizer(CaP),struvite phosphate fertilizer(SP),and P-loaded biochar(BP),produced from ISSA were characterized,and their agronomic effectiveness was verified by hydroponic and soil cultivation.In addition to the three kinds of RPFs,a control group(mono-phosphate fertilizer in hydroponic group/compound fertilizer in soil cultivation group)and a blank control group(BC,with zero P)were tested on choy sum and ryegrass at the same time.SP has the highest P purity(76.0%of struvite)while the BP has the most complex P species(P was co-exist with Fe,Al,and Mg).Plant growth results showed that the RPFs greatly facilitated plant growth and demonstrated superior/comparable effects to those of control group.In hydroponics testing,SP showed the best effect(shoot length of 17.0 cm,chlorophyll content of 2.05 mg/g)due to the Mg involved and the high P purity of SP,while BP performed the best(shoot length of 13.7 cm,chlorophyll content of 2.42 mg/g)in the soil testing system among all of the groups because of the additional nutritional elements and the high P availability of BP.Additionally,the accumulation of heavy metals in the plants under all conditions did not exceed the limits stipulated in the regulations.These results indicate that recovering P from ISSA is an attractive technology to produce P fertilizers,which can alleviate both the scarcity of phosphate resources and the burden of ISSA management. 展开更多

In a fusion reactor, plasma-facing components(PFCs) will suffer severe thermal shock; behavior and performance of PFCs under high heat flux(HHF) loads are of major importance for the long-term stable operation of the reactor. This work investigates the thermo-mechanical behaviors of tungsten armor under high heat loads by the method of finite element modeling and simulating. The temperature distribution and corresponding thermal stress changing rule under different HHF are analyzed and deduced. The Manson–Coffin equation is employed to evaluate the fatigue lifetime(cyclic times of HHF loading) of W-armored first wall under cyclic HHF load. The results are useful for the formulation design and structural optimization of tungsten-armored PFCs for the future demonstration fusion reactor and China fusion experimental thermal reactor. 展开更多
