A modified mixed strengthening model was proposed for describing the yield strength of particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites.The strengthening mechanisms of the composites were analyzed based on the microstru...A modified mixed strengthening model was proposed for describing the yield strength of particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites.The strengthening mechanisms of the composites were analyzed based on the microstructures and compression mechanical properties.The distribution uniformity of reinforcements and cooperation relationship among dislocation mechanisms were considered in the modified mixed strengthening model by introducing a distribution uniformity factor u and a cooperation coefficient fc,respectively.The results show that the modified mixed strengthening model can accurately describe the yield strengths of Al3Ti/2024Al composites with a relative deviation less than1.2%,which is much more accurate than other strengthening models.The modified mixed model can also be used to predict the yield strength of Al3Ti/2024Al composites with different fractions of reinforcements.展开更多
BACKGROUND The pontic design of fixed dental prostheses(FDPs)is strongly associated with the phonetic function,and the phonetic function of anterior FDPs with different pontic designs remains understudied.AIM To inves...BACKGROUND The pontic design of fixed dental prostheses(FDPs)is strongly associated with the phonetic function,and the phonetic function of anterior FDPs with different pontic designs remains understudied.AIM To investigate the immediate and short-term influence of pontic design of anterior FDPs on Chinese speech in a clinical case using objective acoustic analysis.METHODS Two FDPs with two types of pontic design(saddle pontic and modified ridge lap pontic)were fabricated for one patient with maxillary anterior teeth missing.The acoustic analysis of patient’s articulation was conducted immediately after wearing the FDPs and 1 wk after wearing these FDPs.RESULTS The effect of FDP on Chinese vowels(/a/,/o/,/e/,/i/,/u/,and/ü/)was insignificant,because the recovery of vowel distortion occurred within 1 wk for both FDPs.Three(/f/,/s/,and/sh/)of eight Chinese fricative consonants were found to have obvious distortions,and the/s/sound distortion last for more than 1 wk for the patient wearing FDP with modified ridge lap pontic design.CONCLUSION The influence of anterior FDP on articulation of Chinese vowels is insignificant,while the articulation of Chinese fricative consonants is more susceptible.When fabricating anterior FDPs for patients with speech related professions,saddle pontic design can be an alternative option compared with modified ridge lap pontic design.展开更多

Background The Philadelphia(Ph)chromosome is the hallmark chromosome aberration in chronic myeloid leukemia(CML),which confers the cancer phenotype of the disease.However,how the Ph chromosome forms and the genetic cl...Background The Philadelphia(Ph)chromosome is the hallmark chromosome aberration in chronic myeloid leukemia(CML),which confers the cancer phenotype of the disease.However,how the Ph chromosome forms and the genetic clonal evolution structure after targeted Ph treatment are still unclear.Methods In this study,we performed genome sequencing and clonal evolution analyses in a series of bone marrow specimens and skin biopsy from a CML patient who had received hematopoietic stem cell transplantation from her sister,then relapsed(lymphoid blast crisis),and received Ph-targeted therapy.Results The Ph chromosome was the“driver”clonal change in the original CML and the relapse.Both the patient and her sister had micro-deletions in the BCR gene region;however,the patient had a frameshift BRIP1 mutation that may account for the malfunctioning homologous recombination DNA repair of the BCR gene region and formation of the Ph chromosome.Conclusion We found that the BCR-ABL1 translocation was the driving force of the patient’s CML and relapse.The malfunctioning double-strand DNA break repair caused by the BRIP1 mutation could be the cause of Ph chromosome formation in the patient.展开更多
We analyzed variations in the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)genome during a flight-related cluster outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)in Shenzhen,China,to explore the characteri...We analyzed variations in the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)genome during a flight-related cluster outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)in Shenzhen,China,to explore the characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 transmission and intra-host single nucleotide variations(iSNVs)in a confined space.Thirty-three patients with COVID-19 were sampled,and 14 were resampled 3-31 days later.All 47 nasopharyngeal swabs were deep-sequenced.iSNVs and similarities in the consensus genome sequence were analyzed.Three SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern,Delta(n=31),Beta(n=1),and C.1.2(n=1),were detected among the 33 patients.The viral genome sequences from 30 Delta-positive patients had similar SNVs;14 of these patients provided two successive samples.Overall,the 47 sequenced genomes contained 164 iSNVs.Of the 14 paired(successive)samples,the second samples(T2)contained more iSNVs(median:3;95%confidence interval[95%CI]:2.77-10.22)than did the first samples(T1;median:2;95%CI:1.63-3.74;Wilcoxon test,P=0.021).38 iSNVs were detected in T1 samples,and only seven were also detectable in T2 samples.Notably,T2 samples from two of the 14 paired samples had additional mutations than the T1 samples.The iSNVs of the SARS-CoV-2 genome exhibited rapid dynamic changes during a flight-related cluster outbreak event.Intra-host diversity increased gradually with time,and new site mutations occurred in vivo without a population transmission bottleneck.Therefore,we could not determine the generational relationship from the mutation site changes alone.展开更多
Q fever is a zoonotic disease caused by infection withCoxiella burnetii(C.burnetii).Due to its atypical symptoms and the absence of specific detection methods,Q fever is underdiagnosed commonly.Herein,we report a case...Q fever is a zoonotic disease caused by infection withCoxiella burnetii(C.burnetii).Due to its atypical symptoms and the absence of specific detection methods,Q fever is underdiagnosed commonly.Herein,we report a case of Q fever confirmed by metagenomic next-generation sequencing(mNGS)in March 2024 in Guangdong Province,China.The patient initially experienced fever and was admitted to hospital six days later.Despite a series of laboratory tests conducted at the hospital,the pathogen remained undetermined.Ten days after admission,mNGS revealed that the patient was infected withC.burnetii.The patient subsequently underwent treatment with doxycycline and recovered well.Epidemiological investigation revealed that the patient had been exposed to sheep infected withC.burnetii without any protective measures in Jiangxi Province,China.Based on the comprehensive results of mNGS,exposure history,clinical manifestations and treatment response,the patient was confirmed as a Q fever case.As a neglected and underestimated illness,Q fever necessitates an elevation in awareness among medical staff and the public.The public should be encouraged to take personal protective measures when exposed to livestock.Further research is needed to explore the rational application of mNGS in the diagnosis of uncommon and unknown diseases.展开更多
