Effect of Variation of the Coefficient of Friction on the Temperature at the Level of the Fault Lips

Earth’s crust is an anisotropic and purely heterogeneous medium, which is justified by existence of different discontinuities;our study aims to show the effect of the variation of coefficient of friction on the evolution of temperature and its impact on seismic forecasting. In this work, we are model in 2D the variation of thermal energy and temperature produced by friction at the level of fault lip as function of depth of the seismic focus and at different value of time. Earthquakes are born when the energy accumulated by friction at the level of fault is suddenly released causing damage, sometimes noticeable on the surface of earth (macroseisms), and sometimes not at all noticeable on the surface of earth (microseisms), then energy which occurs before is important to forecasting earthquake. Assuming that coefficient of friction is variable, our results have enabled us to highlight the fact that, the greater the coefficient of friction, more the temperature increases, although the temperature profile increase over time but not linearly reflecting the presence of different asperities and discontinuities zone;slip generated at the level of fault occur a variation of temperature on specific points called roughness in common agreement with the literature. A large part of energy produced by friction is dissipated in heat causing a local increases in temperature which a very short duration and called flash contact temperature, and that despite the fact that the temperature evolved in time and space, it all converged towards a perfectly distinguishable fixed point. 展开更多

Interpretation of Geological and Gravity Data from the Bamiléké Plateau (West-Cameroon): Implication for the Understanding of Its Underground Lithotectonic Geometry

The Bamiléké Plateau represents a key domain in the understanding of the geodynamics associated with the central Cameroon shear. The study aimed to highlight the subsurface architecture of the plateaus basement setting with focus on high potential areas for hydrogeological and mining development projects. To this end, geological field observations were carried out. Since the structures sought were near-surface, a separation approach based on the upward continuation method was applied to the Bouguer anomaly grid. A set of processing techniques, including vertical derivative or DZ, analytical signal or SA and categorization of gravity signatures, was applied to generate the residual map. The synthesis geological model, obtained from analysis and interpretation of the various transformed maps and 2.5D modeling of two gravity profiles P1 and P2 highlights the following features: 1) intrusions of steep-sided granitic batholiths from Dschang to Bandjoun (profile P1), increasing in width from NW (Dschang) to SE (Bandjoun);2) larger volume batholiths with moderate sides located at Bafang and Bangangté (profile P1). These plutonic massifs were weakened by brittle deformation, which favored the emplacement of phonolite or anorthosite dykes within them. The emplacement of these dykes was accompanied by compressional faults with high dip between Dschang and Bandjoun and extensional faults with medium dip between Bafang and Bangangté. These fault zones (trending N85E to N95E) are ideal for hydrogeological investigations in a basement setting, as well as a series of dyke networks that could potentially be preferred zones for the circulation and accumulation of useful substances. The resulting geological sections P1 and P2 highlight the influence of granitic intrusions in the geological system of the study area, as well as the structural control associated with the various dyke intrusions. All the models obtained can serve as fundamental references for hydrogeological and mining exploration project on the Bamiléké Plateau. 展开更多

The quantitative interpretation of gravity anomalies due to shallow structures needs separation between long wavelength anomalies(regional anomalies) and short wavelength anomalies(residual anomalies).The regional-residual field separation can be carried out using the polynomial method.In this case, the so-called regional field of order n is treated as a polynomial of degree n.The present study shows that the degree n must vary between a smallest value n_(min) and a maximum value n_(max).This article presents a method to process gravity data that allows determination of n_(min) and n_(max) for a given study area.We apply the method to gravity data of the South-West Cameroon zone.In this chosen study area, we find that regional anomaly maps of orders ranging from 1 to 9 and residual anomaly maps of orders ranging from 1 to 8 can be used for suitable interpretation.The analyses show that one may need residual anomaly maps of several orders to perform satisfactory quantitative interpretation of the different intrusive bodies found in a given area. 展开更多

The gravity maps display, in Bipindi zone, local oval culminations of low anomalies indicative of a presence of intrusive light body in a subsurface but the nature, the form and the position of this body are still unknown. The analyses of established gravimetric anomaly maps, the multi-scale evaluation of maxima of gradients and the quantitative interpretation of residual anomalies by 3D modelling permit characterizing the intrusive light body situated at Bipindi. The multi-scale evaluation of maxima of gradients shows that the modelling of the intrusive light body of Bipindi can be done without the problem of interference of anomalies from different sources. The 3D model of Bipindi zone shows two dissymmetrical blocks of the same type of rock with a density contrast of -0.095 g·cm-3 in comparison with the density of the surrounding metamorphic rocks. The two blocks are at a distance about 3 km from one to another. The upper surfaces of these blocks lie at a depth between 1 and 2 km. Their lower surfaces have two landings;one lies at a depth of about 8 km and another at a depth about 14 km. A consideration of the density of the modelled body, of the ranges of densities of specific rocks present in the general region indicates that the body may be composed of nepheline syenites. The intrusive body of Bipindi is situated in a senestral shear zone. The area situated between the two blocks of this intrusive body may be indicated for a detail study in the domain of mineral research. 展开更多

Characterization of Near Surface Intrusions in South-West Cameroon Zone Using Gravity Data: Mining and Geothermal Implications

The succession of tectonic phenomena in the South-West Cameroon area suggests that structures from the upper mantle infiltrated and took advantage of the cracks and fractures left by these phenomena to get closer to the earth’s surface. However, the intrusive structures closest to the surface remain poorly known. The objective of this work is to improve the knowledge related to the interpretation of gravity data in order to characterise the near-surface intrusive bodies in the South-West Cameroon area, and then analyse their mining and geothermal implications. To achieve this objective, the indirect, inverse and normalized standard deviation (NSTD) methods were used. The NSTD method was used to detect the contours of the intrusive bodies. The indirect method (spectral analysis) was used to determine the depths of the interfaces of three intrusive bodies, one located on the Bipindi-Ebolowa I axis (G5), the other on the Eseka-Pouma axis (G8) and the last on the Bokito-Monatele axis (G11). The results obtained show roofs located between 0 and 0.61 km, between 0 and 0.37 km and between 0 and 0.73 km for the G5, G8 and G11 bodies, respectively. Finally, the application of the 2D inversion method allowed us to estimate the density contrasts of the intrusive bodies (G5, G8 and G11). The superposition of the intrusive bodies detected by the NSTD with the geological and mineral resources map, as well as an analysis of the results obtained, gave indications of interesting zones for mining prospecting and for the search for geothermal reservoirs. 展开更多

The Garoua Zone in North Cameroon, the subject of this study, is known to have undergone tectonic movements during the Cretaceous, but the zone's structural data remain poorly known.This study exploits the Bouguer anomaly to improve knowledge of Garoua tectonics structures.In order to characterize these structures, two methods are used: Euler's deconvolution method and the method of the horizontal gradient of the vertical derivative.Superposition of the Euler's solutions map for index N=1 with the map from the horizontal gradient of the vertical derivative method allows determination of gravimetric lineaments, interpreted as faults or as linear contacts, from which we deduce a structural map of the study area.Based on this map, we identify sixteen lineaments, of which we count eight as linear contacts and eight as faults.Among the faults, we denote one of depth between 4 and 8 km, five faults of depth ranging between 8 and 13 km, and two faults of depths between 13 and 36 km.Analysis of these faults shows that the seven deepest faults might present a natural risk in our study area.For purposes of civil protection, such deep faults should be monitored and taken into consideration in the implementation of large public works.The structural map, established herein from data on the in-depth extension of each fault, thus increases scientific knowledge in the area that can be used to site public works in ways that reduce risk. 展开更多

Gravity Model for an Anomalous Body Located in the NW Portion of the Douala Sedimentary Sub-Basin, Cameroon (Central Africa)

Gravity studies have been carried out in the Douala sub-basin which is a sedimentary basin located both onshore and offshore on the South coast of Cameroon between latitudes 3°03'N and 4°06'N and longitudes 9°00' and 10°00'E, covering a total surface area of 12,805 km2. On its onshore portion, the Douala sub-basin has a trapezoic shape and covers a total surface area of about 6955 km2 while the offshore part covers an area of about 5850 km2. Gravity data used in this study are constituted of 912 gravity data points located between longitudes 8°10.2' to 10°59.4'E and latitudes 2°30.6' to 4°59.4'N and the study area is located to the NW section of the onshore portion of the Douala sub-basin. This study area is characterised by considerably high positive anomalies attaining peak values of about 104.1 mGals at longitude 9°9.9' and latitude 4°1.1' with contour lines which are mostly oriented in the NNE direction. Residual anomalies were extracted by upward continuation of the Bouguer anomaly field at an optimum height of 30 km. This residual field and those obtained by the separation of polynomial of order 4 had a very high correlation coefficient factor of 0.979. The multi-scale horizontal derivative of the vertical derivative (MSHDVD) method was applied on the extracted residual anomalies for the delimitation of possible contacts in the source while the amplitude spectrum was used to estimate the depth to the top of the potential field source. The MSHDVD method did not delimite any clear cut contacts in the source but the amplitude spectrum estimated the potential field source at a depth of about 4.8 km. The ideal body theory was used to determine the density contrast along a 65 km NW-SE profile yielding a value of 0.266 g/cm3. 2.5D modelling aimed at bringing out the underlying structural layout of this study area presents a source body which is very probably an intrusive igneous block surrounded by sedimentary formations and having a density of 2.77 g/cm3 at a depth of about 5.88 km below the surface and an average thickness of about 26.95 km. 展开更多
